When it comes to limited series, no streaming service has quite the hold on the format quite like Netflix. In 2026, the streamer has already notched a fair share of the year's biggest limited series, beginning with His & Hers starting the year with a bang and Harlan Coben's I Will Find You set the summer on fire with a gripping mystery. This fall, a classic is coming to our watch lists.
Since Netflix's limited series adaptation of John Steinbeck's classic novel East of Eden first went into production in 2024, it has been one of the most highly anticipated Netflix shows. Beyond even the source material been one of the most famous novels of all time, the fact that the series is led by Academy Award nominee Florence Pugh was enough to raise the excitement for its release.
East of Eden release date set for October 2026 on Netflix
Thankfully, we now know what date to mark down on our calendars. Netflix confirmed that East of Eden releases on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026. The limited series contains seven episodes, which will be released all at once on the release date in traditional Netflix fashion rather than being released weekly or in batches. It's the perfect time for the series to drop, right in line with awards season.
Based on Steinbeck's novel, the East of Eden limited series comes from writer and co-showrunner Zoe Kazan and fellow co-showrunner Jeb Stuart, who created Netflix's hit series Vikings: Valhalla. The series was directed by Garth Davis, who helmed the first four episodes, and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, who helmed the final three. In addition to starring, Pugh also executive produced.
Netflix describes the series as a "modern interpretation" of Steinbeck's story, a multigenerational exploration of the Trask family, including brothers Adam (Christopher Abbott) and Charles (Mike Faist), Adam's sons Cal (Joseph Zada) and Aron (Joe Anders), and patriarchy Cyrus (Tracy Letts). But this adaptation places a much larger focus on antihero Cathy Ames (Florence Pugh).
In the novel, the stories of the Trask and Hamilton families are traced throughout their various parallels and intersections as sibling rivalries and the biblical theme of good versus evil weaves throughout the story. Based on the teaser that has been released so far, these aspects of East of Eden are front and center, though through Cathy's point of view.
There's no doubt that with the cast and crew that's involved in the biggest modern adaptation of Steinbeck's word to day, East of Eden will be one of the biggest Netflix releases of the year. The series kicks off a fall lineup for the streamer that includes such star-studded titles as Josh Hartnett's Below, The Diplomat season 4, and Julia Garner's limited series The Altruists.
Netflix hasn't shared the full trailer for East of Eden at this time, though one will be released in the coming months before the show premieres. Before then, take a closer look at the cast with the selection of first-look photos the streamer has released!
