If you're scrolling through the rows and rows of movies available to watch on Netflix but coming up short, it's the perfect time of the year to get excited for some new releases. The streaming service tends to release and add some of the best movies around during the summer months, and that's everything from rom-coms to throwbacks to some recent Oscar-winning hits.
Recently, Netflix has added such titles as Poor Things, which won Emma Stone her second Academy Award for Best Actress, and Ticket to Paradise, an underrated romantic comedy that reteams iconic movie stars Julia Roberts and George Clooney for a summery romp. But there are so many more movies coming to Netflix throughout the summer, including a reigning Oscar winner.
Hament is coming to Netflix in July 2026
The historical drama film Hamnet, which was nominated for eight Academy Awards, will make its streaming debut on Netflix on Monday, July 6, 2026. Before making its way to Netflix, the movie was available to stream on Peacock following the conclusion of its theatrical run. Landing on Netflix will be the movie's widest audience in the streaming field yet, giving new fans a chance to watch.
From ChloƩ Zhao, the two-time Oscar-winning director of Nomadland, the movie is based on the book of the same name by Maggie O'Farrell. In the movie, William Shakespeare's life is dramatized as his life with his wife Anne Hathaway (renamed by her given name Agnes in the film) and their shared grief over the death of their young son Hamnet brings devastation to their lives.
Hamnet almost universal critical acclaim and holds a certified fresh score of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. An award season favorite, the movie walked away with a single Oscar win for Best Actress for Jessie Buckley's performance, but other major Academy Award nominations included Best Picture, Best Director for Zhao, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Zhao and O'Farrell.
In addition to being a critically adored award winner, Hamnet also performed well at the box office, bringing in a worldwide gross of $109 million against its much smaller budget of between $30 million and $35 million. By all accounts, the movie was an incredible success in every sense, from its commercial success to the care and grace that was given to the material.
Even though Hamnet isn't rated R, it's still a movie that's difficult to watch because it's full of so many raw and bare emotions. It's no wonder that Buckley very deservedly won the Oscar because as a viewer, you feel every single emotion that she conveys as Agnes, every single heart-shattering instance of grief and loss. You won't soon forget her devastatingly honest performance.
A historical drama that will leave you reaching for the tissues and feeling big emotions might not be your first choice for movie night during the summer, but Hamnet is the kind of movie that everyone should experience at least once. If you're brave enough for a rewatch, make sure to also tune in with the rest of the first-time watchers when the movie hits Netflix on July 6.
