Netflix adding 26 new movies and shows this week (Feb. 9, 2025)

A third of these premiere on Valentine's Day. You'll never guess their theme.

This week brings romance and plenty of it to your favorite streaming service (that would be Netflix, of course). This is the week when our corporate overlords compel you to buy tons of candy and flowers to prove your love. It was as if putting up with their shenanigans all year wasn't proof enough.

Don't worry, there's more than romance in store. The week kicks off on Sunday one lonely debut, a basketball comedy. That seems like an odd bit of counter-programming to the biggest annual sports event in the U.S., but nobody asked me. Monday brings a trio of war movies along with the debut of a three-part miniseries documenting a battle gone wrong. Happy stuff!

There's so much to see in this week's double baker's dozen of movies and shows. Spoiled alert for my own article: a few of the movies I've listed don't appear on Netflix's own site, but are shown as premiering this week by at least three other reputable sources. I'll note those in the listings as...probable. Likely? Well, we'll find out soon enough.

Netflix starts with war flicks and a pair of Japanese dramas

For those who didn't get their fill of aggression during the Super Bowl, Netflix is queuing up three war movies, and a three-part documentary series on Monday. Let's start with Aftermath, an action-thriller that came out last year.

Okay, technically it's not a war movie, but the protagonist is a vet forced to battle a rogue group of ex-military evildoers. So, kind of a private war. You can also catch Rambo and Rambo: Last Blood for a double dose of one of Sylvester Stallone's most memorable characters.

Surviving Black Hawk Down documents the events of the battle of Mogadishu in Somalia. The fictionalized version, Black Hawk Down, won a pair of Oscars. Now, more than 30 years after the event, you have the chance to learn even more about how everything spun out of control, from the perspective of both sides of the battle.

Heavy going, no doubt. For lighter fare, you can catch the 16th season of American Pickers, or jump into the Japanese drama series Dr. Coto's Clinic. After making a serious mistake, a Tokyo surgeon travels to Okinawa to care for the people of a small island. Two seasons of 11 episodes each equals maximum binge time. Hey, compared to Mogadishu, it's light.

The other Japanese series debuts on Super Sunday. Inheritance Detective, like the aforementioned Dr. Coto, is based on a popular manga series. This has perhaps the most descriptive title ever - it's about a detective who investigates questionable inheritances. New episodes follow weekly, so you'll just have to watch this show like a normal person. And basketball comedy Uncle Drew will probably hit the court Sunday as well. Probably, as Netflix hasn't listed it yet, but a few other sources have.

Hey, we made it to Tuesday. The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep is the big thrill for most viewers. It's animated, so there's no Henry Cavill, but it does have plenty of monsters for Geralt to hack and slash. Speaking of hacking and slashing, Train to Busan should show up on your screen on Tuesday as well. This is another film that Netflix hasn't listed (yet) as a new arrival, but other sources have.

Its animated sequel, Peninsula, will be available as well. Train is a brilliant take on the modern zombie genre, the perfect Valentine's week antidote for those who prefer to ignore all that kissy stuff. For more laughs and less violence, tune in to the stand-up special, Felipe Esparza: Raging Fool.

Netflix begins the onslaught of romance on Wednesday

Did I say onslaught? Sorry, I meant offering. The lovely offering of a pair of rom-coms, Death Before the Wedding and Honeymoon Crasher. The latter film could also be assigned to the horror genre. Abandoned at the altar, the groom takes his mom on his expensive honeymoon trip. Rest assured, this is not a remake of Harold and Maude. As for Death Before..., all I can tell you is Netflix says it's comedy, and asks if love will find a way. The answer is usually yes.

Thursday sees the return of a pair of outrageously popular series. First up is season six, part 3 of Cobra Kai. This won't just wrap up the season, but the entire series. All five episodes will be available for your viewing pleasure.

Season 3 of Resident Alien continues the story of small-town doctor/extraterrestrial alien Harry Vanderspiegle as he just tries to fit in. Or, take over the world. Whatev. Alan Tudyk is, ummm... what's the word... oh, yeah. Amazing, that's it. If you haven't seen the first two seasons of this terrific show, get started now.

There's also season 2 of the Kuwaiti drama The Exchange, the rom-com flick La Dolce Villa, and the searing drama Trial By Fire, starring Laura Dern. There's something for the kiddos, too. a new children's animated series from Korea, Dog Days Out. OMG, it's cuteness overdrive.

Netflix delivers the presents for Valentine's Day

As Led Zeppelin once sang, there's a whole lotta love here. We'll begin with the Taiwanese series I Am Married...But! Throughout 12 episodes, a newly married couple discovers that marriage isn't quite what they expected. Season 4 of the Spanish comedy-drama series Valeria arrives on Friday.

Next up, two couples navigate the twisting path of romance over 10 episodes of the Korean romantic series Melo Movie. It's a series, despite the title. As for the trailer, I expect the series to be available dubbed in English and five or six other languages, as with nearly everything on Netflix.

There's still more, gang. The Hindi rom-com Dhoom Dhamm follows a couple on their wedding night as they're thrown into a chaotic search for the mysterious Charlie. Picture Something Wild, but with awesome costumes. Our whirlwind world tour continues with the Swedish rom-com Love Forever, as another couple's plans for a low-key wedding are wrecked by the demands of - well, everyone else.

We've only just begun, fans. The Most Beautiful Girl in the World takes us back across the globe to Indonesia. To inherit his father's fortune, a playboy has to finally get married and start a family. Just one problem: he has to create a dating show to find the lady mentioned in the title. His producer has some ideas of her own. Yes, you know where this is going, but that's the case in nearly every rom-com. It's all about the journey, and this one promises to be a blast.

Umjolo: There Is No Cure is the fourth and final film in the series of romantic dramas from South Africa. All are available on Netflix for your viewing pleasure. And finally, we return to the States for season 8 of Love is Blind, the show that reveals just how shallow some people can be. Happily, not all.
