Netflix is adding 9 new movies and shows this week (Jan. 26, 2025)

Thrills, chills, and more. That's the weather today; let's see what's new on Netflix this week

A24 Films' You Hurt My Feelings
A24 Films' You Hurt My Feelings | Julia Louis Dreyfus stars Nicole Holofcener's comedy-drama-romance

I know it's hard to believe, but the final week of January promises more than frigid temps. Netflix gives you nine more reasons to stay inside this week - as if you needed an excuse.

Thrillseekers, we've got you. The second seasons of a pair of intense thrillers premiere this week - get those binging goggles ready! A critically acclaimed comedy series returns, as does a solid anime series. Craving more sports? The second season of a critically acclaimed sports series arrives this week, too. Oh, and a much-loved children's show debuts on the "tu dum" streamer, too.

But wait, there's more! I'm not sure if writing that made me happy or like I lost a bit of my soul. Anyway, for those who want their entertainment in one convenient package, there's a family drama from Spain,
a rom-com with actual depth, and a debut standup special coming to a projector TV or tablet near you. It's all here this week. Let's dive in.

Kick off your Netflix viewing party with a beloved star of the not-so-small-anymore-screen

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is terrific in You Hurt My Feelings, a comedy-drama-romance from writer-director Nicole Holofcener. Now let's see you work four hyphens into one sentence. If you're somehow unaware of Ms. Louis-Dreyfus' previous work, welcome to our planet. As for Holofcener, she also wrote and directed the wonderful Enough Said, and wrote the screenplay for Can You Ever Forgive Me? and The Last Duel. She's got some serious chops.

Here, Louis-Dreyfus plays a novelist who overhears her husband giving his true opinion of her latest book. To say he was less enthused than she'd always thought is, well, putting it mildly. The 2023 release scored 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. A24 studio rarely misses, and they maintained their track record with this excellent rom-com-dram - oh, forget it. Just watch the trailer if you need any more convincing. Treat yourself and watch the whole movie when it premieres on the 26th.

The very next day, you can switch gears and treat the kids to the Netflix debut of Ms. Rachel. There's a pretty good chance they've already seen some episodes of one of the hottest children's shows, as her show began streaming on YouTube in 2019. Then again, that place can be a bit wild for unsupervised viewing, so maybe this will be all new for them.

Ms. Rachel is something of a throwback to the best of children's programming. Hosted by... whodathunkit, Ms. Rachel (Accurso), the series will launch with four episodes on your favorite streamer. When The New York Times reports that many parents not only see her as the new Fred Rogers but that she's reaching children who have struggled with speech, well... I'm tuning in.

Oof, time to switch gears before I start getting all sappy and emotional. Okay, we've booked our viewing for Sunday and Monday, so let's take in a standup special on Tuesday. Comedian Liza Treyger makes her Netflix debut with Liza Treyger: Night Owl. Treyger previously appeared on Comedy Central with her half-hour special, Glittercheese, and also appeared on Netflix's standup collection, The Degenerates. She's appeared in several shows and films, but this is her first full hour, Don't miss it!

There's no letup in the schedule as Wednesday brings us the second season of Six Nations: Full Contact. The series follows - you guessed it - six nations as they vie for the coveted Guinness Six Nations Championship rugby tournament. Ah yes, rugby and Guinness - two of the manliest endeavors ever created. Catch a glimpse of what you can expect in the eight episodes below,

Netflix premieres three sophomore seasons this Thursday

That's right, no less than three series arrive on the 30th with their second seasons. Let's go in alphabetical order here, as I hold the Dewey Decimal system powerless for streaming. Cuz, you know...not books. Anyway, first up is season two of Mo, the timely comedy about a Palestinian trying to find safe harbor in America. If you haven't seen season one, yes, it really is a comedy - albeit one with more than a little bite. Don't believe me: check out the trailer for the second season.

Feel like you don't have enough anxiety in your life? Okay, weirdo, we've got the right show for you. The Recruit returns with six episodes for its second season. The story of CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks continues in South Korea, as he's caught up in more layers of intrigue than he thought possible. Considering that the series stars Noah Centineo (the To All the Boys I've Loved Before films), I don't imagine Netflix is too worried about viewership numbers for this one.

Need a bit more craziness? Jump on into season two of The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse. I'm not sure if we're supposed to multiply them or divide them here; thanks for nothing, PEMDAS. While Four Knights is indeed season two of the popular anime series, there are also four related series, all available on Netflix. No worries, it's only 100 episodes, before you get to the latest installment. Hey, you need something to watch, right? Find more details here.

Congrats, you made it to Friday, and your eyes aren't even that bloodshot. Netflix wraps up January with a pair of Spanish productions. The first is the follow-up to a critical favorite. Season one of The Snow Girl earned a stellar 100 percent critic's rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Season two follows journalist Miren Rojo (Milena Smit) as she investigates the disappearance of two young girls from a prestigious school. See if you can uncover all of the dark secrets in the six episodes before our heroine.

Netflix may have saved the best for last. The Spanish film Lucca's World arrives on the 31st. A family struggles with the challenges of rearing a son with cerebral palsy. When his condition worsens, his mother hears of an experimental treatment in India. You know where they're headed next. Catch the trailer below, and as it's based on a true story, have your tissues ready.
