Time to reload your binge list, gang. Netflix has more movies and shows, both new and *kinda* old for you this week. Catch old favorites and find new ones this week on your favorite streaming service. It is Netflix, right? Right.
I'm sure you'll be shocked, but there's something for everyone this week. Comedies, thrillers, dramas, family fare - although there is one shocking development. For the first time in what feels like a decade, you won't see a new stand-up comedy special debut this week. There are already several great specials to watch, just no new ones this week. Don't worry, the week is packed with laughs.
One of the best comedy series ever adds two more seasons to the rotation this week, and sequels to a pair of the top family films of the past few years arrive as well. There's a new season of an acclaimed sports documentary and some popular foreign series making their American debut, too. It all kicks off with one of the awards shows of the year.
Netflix starts the week with a star-studded awards show on Sunday
Yes, the term "star-studded" does tend to be overused. But when you're talking about an awards show for actors, it's appropriate. The 31st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be on Netflix for the second consecutive year. Kristen Bell - who incidentally stars in the Netflix series Nobody Wants This - will host. The SAG Awards are typically a strong indicator for the Oscars if you're into that kind of thing. That would be me, for one.
Tuesday brings season 3 of Full Swing, the acclaimed documentary that follows some of the world's best golfers on and off the links. You may think romance is gone after Valentine's Day, but Really Love is here to fulfill that craving for l'amour. For those with a darker bent, 2022's Watcher pits new scream queen Maika Monroe (It Follows, Longlegs) against a serial killer in Bucharest. One of these might be a bit sweeter than the other.
On a personal note - as it should be, because I'm writing this - two more seasons of one of the best comedy series ever comes to Netflix this week. Yes, fam, it's time to bust out your best a capella rendition of "I Want It That Way" because seasons 5 and 6 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine land on Wednesday. The bad news is that the first two seasons won't be available after the 25th. Warning: if you haven't seen it, just wait for episode 17 of season 5.
Wednesday also brings the Italian documentary Miss Italia Musn't Die. Seems to be an appropriate title, as it's about the struggle to keep the Miss Italia beauty pageant going amidst enough scandals to sink almost any tradition. The Danish drama A Copenhagen Love Story tells the story of a young couple facing the struggle of bringing a child into the world.
To lighten the mood, catch the sadly underrated Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. If you haven't seen it yet, now's your chance to dive into a very well-crafted - and very funny - fantasy world.
Before we get to those, three series arrive on Thursday. The first is season 2 of the Turkish crime drama Graveyard. Season 1 just debuted last month, so you may have a super binge weekend in your future. Kate Hudson stars in the original comedy series Running Point as the new owner of the Los Angeles Waves basketball team.
The third series is the most promising. Toxic Town stars Jodie Whittaker as one of a group of young mothers fighting for justice. It's based on the actual case of the poisoning of an entire town in the aftermath of the cleanup of a toxic waste site. Not an easy watch, but an important one. Whittaker has earned raves for her performance in the four-part limited series. Catch the trailer below.
Three movies make their bow on Netflix on Thursday, too. The Filipino comedy Soysal Climbers shows the lighter side of romance, while the Norwegian drama The Wrong Track shows the lighter side of crippling depression. Wait, that can't be right. Oh, sorry; it's actually about a single mom who enters a cross-country ski marathon to battle depression. That sounds more like an actual movie.
The third is a film that I'm really looking forward to. It's the new Japanese revenge thriller Demon City. Based on the manga Oni Goroshi, it stars Tomo Ukuta (also starring in Netflix's Beyond Goodbye) as a hitman who goes on a bloody rampage of vengeance against the killers of his wife. Think John Wick with more violence and fewer dogs. Based on the trailer, this will either be a yikes or a yay for you. I wish they'd kept the title of the books: Demon Slayer. I dig the Lone Wolf with Cub and guns vibe.
Netflix wraps up the month with two huge family hit movies
As always, there's more on Netflix than the big hits. Let's open with the French thriller Squad 36. A detective must solve the murders of members of his former police unit. Or, you know, maybe not. I'm not giving away anything. Change it up with the docuseries Atana: Metamorphosis, which follows the journey of the Spanish singer/actress to stardom.
The Netherlands brings the comedy series Roosters, following a group of friends as they battle their midlife crises together. I just hope it's better than Wild Hogs. It's been nearly 20 years and I still get hives thinking of that movie.
As for the blockbuster family films, I think a global box office of $400 billion qualifies. That was the haul for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Not my kind of movie, but it's almost universally considered to be even better than the first film in the series. A 96 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes speaks for itself. Oh, and Jim Carrey is over the top? You don't say!
$400 billion is nice, but $960 billion is some serious cha-ching. Box office doesn't equal quality by any means, but that's an awful lot of happy moviegoers. And few movies made the public as happy as Despicable Me 4. Steve Carrell and Kristen Wiig are joined by Will Farrell and Sofia Vergara to voice the cast in what looks like a never-ending gold mine of minions. Enjoy it with your own set of minions at home this weekend.
Just a note, Netflix fam: I'm skipping Saturday as Netlifx is debuting about 16,000 shows on March 1st. Okay, that's an exaggeration, but not by much. You don't have time to read all that today. I'll be back tomorrow to give you the rundown on the dozen premieres coming to you on March 1st.
