Netflix is adding over a dozen new titles to its inventory this week. From new seasons of current hits to topnotch sleeper movies, you can find something for everyone this week on your favorite streaming service.
No, there isn't anything coming this week that's likely to have the same impact as the number one show, Adolescence. By the way, it's every bit as good as the critics say it is. Okay, maybe one show will. But it really isn't likely that anything debuting this week will knock The Electric State out of its top spot among movies. I believe the critics are just as wrong about the sci-fi movie as they are right about the top-ranked drama.
But that's a discussion - or diatribe - for another time. For now, let's delve into the various worlds of zombies, hip-hop, reality shows, and comedy coming up this week. No, that's not all one show, but give them time. I'm sure that's in development somewhere. Will any of these crack the top five?
Netflix adds new seasons and debuts new movies this week to celebrate spring
Okay, that's a lie. There is one show that has every chance of being the new number 1 hit for Netflix. But there's nothing about spring. Adding a documentary about one of the most devastating tornados in history isn't exactly a celebration. Thankfully, this week's slate kicks off with a far more kid-friendly offering: season 4 of the children's show CoComelon Lane.
Also debuting on Monday is season 2 of Inside, the reality series from YouTube creators the Sidemen. Think of this as an updated version of Fear Factor, a show so old that Joe Rogan still had hair. As promised, there are zombies in the offing. Season 1 of The Walking Dead: Dead City arrives with all six episodes available for one great binge-watch.
If you haven't kept up with the 387 various spinoffs of the OG, this is the series featuring the unlikely pairing of Maggie and Negan. Picture a cobra and a mongoose teaming up. This isn't a buddy road show by any means. Yes, it's as combustible as you expect.
That just gets us to Tuesday and the fourth Netflix special from the alleged comedian, Bert Kreischer: Lucky. I may have betrayed my feelings there about the comedy stylings of Kreischer. Your mileage may vary, of course. I can only picture Michael O'Donoghue's infamous Mr. Mike character from Saturday Night Live intoning, "Imagine six-inch steel needles plunged into your eyes."
Thankfully, there's more to watch that day. You'll get seasons 3 and 4 of Love & Hip Hop New York, which originally aired in 2013 on VH1. Rumor has it that the cable channel still occasionally airs music. How quaint. You can also catch The Outrun, a 2024 drama starring the always-brilliant Saoirse Ronan. It earned an 82 percent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Even the critics who didn't love the film gushed about Ronan's performance as a recovering alcoholic.
Well, that was certainly light, fun fare. Wednesday stays pretty bleak with the addition of the documentary The Twister: Caught in the Storm. The doc recounts the day a terrifying EF-5 tornado ripped through the town of Joplin, Missouri, on graduation day. It's from the producer of The Tinder Swindler and the director of the Untold series.
Season 2 of the German thriller series Woman of the Dead doesn't exactly bring any comic relief. It continues the story of a small-town undertaker who's driven to uncover the truth behind her husband's death. Netflix has the pipeline to the dark Teutonic thrillers wide open. This isn't as creepy as Dark, but it'll do.
Hey gang, it's Thursday, and we can finally breathe again. That comic relief I mentioned finally arrives with Bet Your Life, a comedy-drama series from Turkey. A writer of a sports betting column hits a cold streak, but help is on the way. There's just one little problem: his new advisor is dead, and the reporter needs to solve his murder. No word yet if the series will feature Groucho Marx or Turkish Spider-Man. One can dream, though.
I guess that was too much levity for Netflix, as we also get Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. The ever-reliable Gerard Butler stars in the sequel to, oh, I don't know, maybe Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Oh, my bad. It's a jewel heist flick. We also get the next installment of the popular Indian crime drama with Khakee: The Bengal Chapter. For animation fans, there's Wolf King, a series based on the Wereworld book series. Netflix set the bar pretty high with Arcane; we'll see if this can match it.
Thursday also brings the debut of the latest series from producer Shonda Rhimes and writer Paul William Davies. No big deal; she's only the woman who created Grey's Anatomy and Scandal. She's also the executive producer of How to Get Away with Murder and some little show called Bridgerton. So maybe her latest show, The Residence, might be good?
The eight-episode series stars Uzo Aduba ("Crazy Eyes" Warren on Orange is the New Black) as a detective called to the White House to investigate a murder at a state dinner. You might expect a tension-filled drama from this team. Instead, we're getting a light and breezy screwball whodunit. The cast also stars Giancarlo Esposito, Jason Lee, Jane Curtin, and Randall Park. You no doubt remember Park as Jim Halpert on The Office. Anyway, I'm not missing a minute of this show.
We're in the home stretch, gang. Friday features a trio of treats, starting with the South African dramatic series Go! The six-episode series follows a young sprinter who earns a scholarship to a prestigious university - but you know what they say about outrunning your past. I'm not saying it, but I know you know.
We also get Little Siberia, a comedic thriller about a valuable meteorite that crashes into a small town in Finland. It's also about a mysterious pregnancy - not like in Alien: Romulus; more like - uh, who's the baby daddy? This has the added attraction of being the first feature film from Finland on your favorite - okay, that's enough alliteration.
The week wraps up with Revelations, the new thriller from Yeon Sang-ho, the director of the brilliant Train to Busan. A pastor and a detective follow very different paths to solve a missing-person case. If it's remotely as tense as his famous zombie thriller, we're all in for a nerve-wracking experience.
