Listen, just because there isn't some long-awaited fan favorite original Netflix series popping up with a new season, it doesn't mean that there's nothing worth watching this week. I'd say several great shows are coming to your favorite streamer.
We'll get a documentary series about cheerleaders for a team that a lot of people hate. And a documentary about a mayor that a lot of people hated. Thankfully, that balances out with a huge show that many people loved, making its Netflix debut.
I'll be honest; I've never seen a single episode of that show. But I do have about 37 friends who swear it's the best thing ever. We'll get to that soon enough. For now, we've got plenty to talk about. We've got witch hunters - well, one, anyway. We also have demon hunters, just to make sure they didn't feel left out. Add magical standup, weird food, and family drama, and Netflix has you covered this week.
Netflix gets off to a scandalous start this week
The first scandal might well be bringing the 2015 bomb, The Last Witch Hunter, to your screens. It's a fantasy about - well, you probably guessed who it's about. Vin Diesel apparently made this flick about an evil coven in New York City between tire changes on the Fast and Furious series.
We get to see the real magic of the comedic kind with Justin Willman: Magic Lover. Magic acts are inherently goofy, and Willman dials that aspect all the way to 11 in his show.
Twin brothers Tom and Bill Kaulitz return for the second season of their eponymous reality show. No, it's not the Tom & Bill Show. You can catch up on the latest antics of the alleged superstars on Kaulitz & Kaulitz Season 2.
I'd rather watch the antics of the allegedly corrupt and allegedly moronic former mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford, in Trainwreck: Mayor of Mayhem. It's kind of a big deal when the mayor of the country's largest city is filmed smoking crack.
As for that beloved series making its Netflix debut... that would be Scandal. As if showrunner Shonda Rhimes needed another hit after creating Grey's Anatomy (season 21 on Netflix, as of last week). Kerry Washington stars as Olivia Pope, a crisis management specialist who serves as a fixer for the White House. A lot, and I mean a lot, goes on. All seven seasons are ready for your bingeing pleasure.
From the sublime thrills of Scandal, we go to the absurdity of AMERICA'S SWEETHEARTS: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Season 2. No, you will not get a trailer here. I'll just say that the cheerleaders are far more effective at their job than the team that employs them.
For a more appetizing experience, you can catch season 8 of Somebody Feed Phil, in which Phil Rosenthal eats cool stuff all over the world. Even 10 seconds of Ray Romano and Brad Garrett chowing down makes this worth a look.
Wednesday also brings us the debut of Yolanthe. The Dutch reality series follows one of the Netherlands' biggest stars, Yolanthe Cabau, as she starts life over in Los Angeles. We also get season 4 of Rosario Tijeras (Mexico).
The Mexican telenovela is a remake of a Colombian series about a young assassin, Rosario, out for revenge. Now you know why "Mexico" is in the title. As for "tijeras", it's Spanish for scissors or shears. Quite appropriate, as you'll see.
The Waterfront is the latest family drama to debut on Netflix. Picture a show like Ozark or Animal Kingdom, and now make it about fishing. Well, fishing and cocaine. It stars Maria Bello, who's fantastic in everything, and Holt McCallany, who was perfect as Agent Bill Tench in Mindhunter. This show promises to be amazing. I'm packing my rod and reel for this one. And a large cooler for...stuff.
Friday brings us Semi-Soeter, an Afrikaans romantic comedy about a couple who have to pretend they're parents to pitch a baby products brand. It's the sequel to Semi-Soet, in which the same pair was first forced to portray themselves as a couple.
The first film was a massive hit in South Africa, and I expect this will do the same for Netflix. Yes, you can catch the original on Netflix, too. The phrase translates as "half-sweet"; sounds like a couple of my past relationships.
We also get the Spanish documentary Olympo, a drama series about the cutthroat competition at a sports academy. In a lighter vein, we get KPop Demon Hunters. It's all there in the title, fam. The animated film follows three KPop stars who also fight demons to protect their millions of fans. The demons here are a rival boy band.
Because, of course. Sony Animation also gave us the amazing Spider-verse movies and The Mitchells vs the Machines, so I expect this to be MUCH fun.
Our new lineup wraps up Saturday with season 3 of The Great Indian Kapil Show. The Hindi language variety/sketch comedy/talk show hybrid has been a major hit over the first two seasons. Think of a mashup of SNL, America's Got Talent, and The Graham Norton Show, and you're getting there. Well, maybe The Gong Show.
One final note for those who hate subtitles: Netflix typically has dubbed its shows and movies into several, if not dozens, of languages. For example, the new series The Secrets We Keep is available in 17 dubbed and 37 subtitled languages other than the original Danish and English. So please, don't let that scare you away from enjoying the incredible variety of international goodness.
