Matt Damon's thriller is the second most popular Netflix movie of 2026 so far

Matt Damon is everywhere right now after starring as Odyseuss in the biggest non-Toy Story movie of the summer, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.

Before that, though, Damon starred alongside his longtime colleague and friend Ben Affleck in Netflix's The Rip, which we now know is officially the second-biggest Netflix movie of the year so far.

During Netflix's Q2 earnings call, which took place earlier this month, Netflix revealed its top 10 movies of the year so far. The Rip racked up 136.1 million views between Jan. 1 and June 30, which was only about 10 million views from taking the top spot on the list of Netflix's most popular movies of the year behind War Machine.

The Rip premiered on Netflix on Jan. 16, and it was an immediate hit on Netflix. Damon and Affleck play the film's leads alongside a stellar cast that includes Steven Yeun, Kyle Chandler, Sasha Calle, Teyana Taylor, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Scott Adkins.

Written and directed by Joe Carnahan, The Rip is loosely inspired by the real story of Miami-Dade County Police Captain Chris Casiano. The film tells the story of a tactical narcotics team, who finds $20 million on what appears to be a routine assignment. With that much money involved, the team decides what to do with it. Will they take it for themselves? Will they turn it over? Or will they turn on each other?

The Rip didn't have the best reception from audiences and critics, but for me, it's basically everything a Netflix thriller should be. There's a lot of action and twists and turns. It's not a fun movie, considering everything that happens, but it's a lot of fun for a movie night thriller.

The best part of the movie for me was the incredible performances from an awesome cast. You don't get much better than Damon and Affleck when it comes to a movie like this. They've been in some of the best crime movies and heist thrillers of the last 20 years with The Departed, The Town, and more.

It's not just Damon and Affleck, though. Yeun delivers, perhaps, the performance of the whole movie. Taylor and Calle are also fantastic.

I'm not saying The Rip is winning many Oscars. That's for Damon's other big movie of the year. For a Netflix movie, and I don't mean that in an insulting way, The Rip is definitely cut above almost every other Netflix movie released this year so far.

With the success of The Rip, hopefully, we'll see Damon and Affleck reunite for another Netflix movie in the future. Right now, it looks like Affleck has another movie, Animals, that he will direct and also star in for Netflix this year. Yeun will also star alongside Affleck in the film, so it's already kind of a mini Rip reunion.
