It's been quite some time since Oscar winners and long-time best friends Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have starred in a major movie together, but the dynamic duo finally returns to the screen for one of the most highly anticipated new Netflix movies of the year.

Affleck and Damon reunite for the action thriller The Rip, which comes from writer and director Joe Carnahan (who Affleck previously worked with 20 years ago on Smokin' Aces in 2006). From all angles, the movie couldn't be more of a special victory lap that's sure to heat up our watch lists.

The Rip might be the biggest Netflix movie of the year so far, and that's not just because we're barely one month into the year. An action-packed blockbuster starring two of the biggest movie stars of all time? It's a must-watch! Below we're sharing all about the movie, including when to tune in!

What time does The Rip release on Netflix?

Set your reminders now! The Rip premieres on Friday, January 16, 2026 on Netflix, but don't expect the movie to have a primetime release. Like all Netflix original movies, the action thriller will be available to stream beginning at midnight PT, which is 3 a.m. ET. Some time zones will be able to watch the movie as soon as it drops, but The Rip will likely be weekend viewing for those in the US.

Unless you are the most passionate Good Will Hunting fan in the world, you probably won't be burning the midnight oil to watch The Rip the second it drops on Netflix. The movie will be available to watch on Netflix as soon as you wake up on Friday morning, so you don't have to stay up until the middle of the night. It's exciting that Affleck and Damon are teaming up again, but get some sleep!

Who stars in The Rip with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck?

Of course, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are the main event that will have everyone tuning in to watch The Rip. The Rip trailer and what to expect from the movie

If you're wondering what to expect from The Rip beyond an exciting, nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat thriller, we're going to share both the trailer and synopsis. Affleck and Damon have appeared in their fair share of crime dramas with action and thrills, but joining forces for this one just takes it to the next level. It's kind of like the Bourne movies and The Town merged into one.

The Rip takes place in Miami, Florida, as a team of cops track down millions of dollars in a nearby house, but distrust from the public and within the force itself calls the loyalty of the team into question. The trailer teases the chilling twists and turns the movie takes and give us a good look into why the movie has been given an R rating (for violence and language).

Take a closer look at the official synopsis for the movie as shared by Netflix: "Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on."
