Netflix pretty much adds new shows and movies to its platform every day, whether that be original or licensed content. On March 1, the streaming giant released the 2016 action thriller flick Deepwater Horizon, and it has already shot up the charts. As of March 4, the Mark Wahlberg underrated film is currently ranked at the No. 6 spot on Netflix's top 10 movies list. While it's not sitting at the No. 1 or 2 spot, it's clear that viewers are flocking to this intense, real-life disaster thriller.
Deepwater Horizon dramatizes one of the most devastating industrial disasters in recent history. It's the April 2010 explosion of the offshore oil drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, which was operated by the BP company in the Gulf of Mexico. The film centers on the rig’s crew, who must navigate escalating danger when a series of critical safety failures and ignored warning signs culminate in a catastrophic blowout.
Peter Berg (Mile 22, Lone Survivor) directed Deepwater Horizon from a screenplay that was co-written by Matthew Michael Carnahan (21 Bridges, World War Z) and Matthew Sand (Ninja Assassin). Adapted from the "Deepwater Horizon's Final Hours" article by David Barstow, David Rohde, and Stephanie Saul, the movie primarily follows Mike Williams (Wahlberg), the rig’s chief electronics technician, who finds himself thrust into life-or-death situations as the crisis unfolds.
Wahlberg is certainly no stranger to action thrillers, but Deepwater Horizon feels distinct within his filmography because it forgoes flashy espionage plots and crime-fueled spectacle in favor of a far more realistic and sobering story. Rather than stepping into the role of a larger-than-life action hero, he plays an everyday working man suddenly thrown into an unimaginable and terrifying crisis.
As expected from an Oscar-nominated actor, Wahlberg delivers a gripping performance. He perfectly captures both the fear and determination of a man fighting to save his coworkers while facing his own mortality. Joining him in the cast are other talented actors, including Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O'Brien, Kate Hudson, and many others.

While this action thriller film was received positively by critics upon its theatrical release, it never quite reached the blockbuster heights many expected. Despite strong reviews, Deepwater Horizon failed to make a major splash at the box office. It struggled to turn a real profit against its hefty production and marketing costs.
2016 was a massive year for cinema, so Deepwater Horizon inevitably faced stiff competition from franchise juggernauts and long-awaited sequels that dominated headlines and box office dollars. But nearly a decade later, streaming has given this action-packed film the second life it arguably always deserved. On Netflix, audiences are choosing it instead of the usual comfort rewatches and splashy new releases. This is something we're glad to see happen!
After watching Deepwater Horizon, we recommend checking out some of Wahlberg's other work that's streaming on Netflix. The streamer also features titles like Me Time, Lone Survivor, Four Brothers, The Union, and Spenser Confidential. However, keep in mind that some of those movies are licensed. That said, they won't remain on Netflix forever. The same goes for Deepwater Horizon.
