Madelyn Cline is no stranger to starring in hit titles on Netflix. After all, she hit a homerun her first time out in a starring role on the streamer. While she had a small role in Stranger Things, Cline stars as one of the central leads of the teen adventure drama Outer Banks, which became a worldwide phenomenon now entering its fifth and final season to be released next year.

She also starred in the Knives Out sequel Glass Onion, a Netflix original movie and another massive hit for the streamer. Although she also starred in the Prime Video rom-com The Map That Leads to You this summer, the rising star made the leap to the big screen in a major starring role in the horror movie reboot I Know What You Did Last Summer. Naturally, it's became a streaming sensation.

I Know What You Did Last Summer was added to Netflix on Oct. 16 following its July premiere in theaters. The horror movie arrived on the streamer as part of its deal for the exclusive first streaming rights to Sony's theatrical films, and the release for the summer flick couldn't have lined up more perfectly to get a second life during spooky season. It's starting already!

I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot soars on Netflix

Even though the movie takes place during the summertime for the most part, it didn't take long for horror fans and those who missed the movie during its theatrical run to start watching. I Know What You Did Last Summer quickly took up residence in the top 10 most popular movies ranking on Netflix, and as of this writing on Oct. 20, the film places dead center at No. 5.

The reboot/sequel hybrid also stars the original 1997 classic's stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. reprising their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson. Their characters act as mentors to the new generation played by Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Sarah Pidgeon, Jonah Hauer-King, and Tyriq Withers. However, the movie flips your expectations on who the slasher was all along.

Cline stars as Danica Richards, a wealthy resident of Southport, North Carolina, celebrating her engagement to Teddy Spencer (Withers). After an accident on a cliffside that sends another drive to his death, the group decides to leave the crime scene. A year later, they're mostly estranged as the secret eats them apart. One by one, they become hunted by The Fisherman just like in the '90s.

I Know What You Did Last Summer was, for the most part, a homerun with fans of the franchise, but failed to wow critics. The movie holds a 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and ended its theatrical run with a worldwide gross of $64.8 million against its $18 million budget. While the movie's ending definitely sets up a sequel (in more ways than one), it's unclear if one will come to fruition.

But don't let the far too low Rotten Tomatoes score and the tepid box office returns to stop you from turning on I Know What You Did Last Summer for movie night leading up to Halloween. It's an excellent slasher full of suspense, and it will keep you guessing about what's actually happening. There are also lots of fun Easter eggs and surprises for fans. The original classic isn't on Netflix, but you can watch the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer for a double feature!
