Little House on the Prairie makes discouraging Netflix ratings debut despite season 2 renewal

Netflix's Little House on the Prairie reboot has already been renewed for a second season, but the series' premiered with ratings far lower than I Will Find You.

By far one of the biggest Netflix new releases of the summer so far, Little House on the Prairie made its premiere on July 9 and introduced a new generation to the timeless tale that stole the hearts of millions many years ago. Netflix's reboot of the beloved series surely came with some hesitation among the fans who grew up with the Ingalls family, but it's already a proven hit.

Since its release, Little House on the Prairie has hit the peak of Netflix's daily Top 10 most popular shows ranking in the United States as fans continue to discover and rediscover the family-friendly Western drama series. However, the show's ratings debut on the streamer's Global Top 10 proved much less impressive and found the show getting off to slow start so far.

After its first four days of availability on Netflix, Little House on the Prairie ranked No. 3 in the Top 10 Most Popular English-Language TV Shows list. The series attracted 6.4 million views, which translates to 42.7 million hours viewed. While these seem like decent numbers, and they are, these ratings are comparatively lower than past Netflix drama series debuts.

Little House on the Prairie's 6.4 million views opening weekend tracked below the debuts of last year's Netflix shows The Waterfront and The Abandons, based on a ratings graph shared by What's on Netflix. It's worth noting that both of those series were canceled after only one season. House of Guinness and Dept. Q debuted lower than Little House and still earned renewals.

All things considered, it's all relative when it comes to Netflix ratings debuts as the streaming service looks at far more than the data that's made public. Other factors like the completion rate, which isn't announced to consumers, and financial considerations play a bigger part than we realize. Luckily, Little House on the Prairie didn't have to worry about its ratings to earn a renewal.

Back in March 2026, Netflix announced the premiere date for the series and also revealed the early renewal for season 2. Before ratings even became a concern for the show's future, Netflix must have really believed in its reboot of the series and decided to bet big on this franchise to connect with its audience, both new and old. And the reception has more than made up for its low debut.

The reboot has already been certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an 80% score from critics. While the audience score is a bit lower at 69%, but that's to be expected with a reboot of a fan-favorite series when expectations are high. But for the most part, fan reception has been positive among an audience searching for a show for families among a sea of thrillers.

This week, Little House on the Prairie might not have been a match for Harlan Coben's I Will Find You, which remained No. 1 on the Global Top 10 for the fourth week in a row. But the reboot's first full week of availability could see its views increase considerably, possibly enough to unseat the limited series, though the Ingalls will have competition from The Hawk, Will Ferrell's new comedy series.
