Lindsay Lohan sets Netflix return with rom-com from Mean Girls director

If you made an Irish wish that Lindsay Lohan would find herself falling for another Netflix movie, we have some news that's no longer our little secret. (Did you catch all those references?) After conquering the big screen all over again with Freakier Friday and filming a new Hulu limited series, the actress is charting her return to Netflix for a new romantic movie with a familiar collaborator.

Lohan will produce and headline the upcoming Netflix original movie Return to You, which comes from director Mark Waters, who helmed Lohan's classic 2000s comedies Freaky Friday and Mean Girls. The star also reunites with Brad Krevoy, the producer of the Netflix romantic comedies that helped cement her acting comeback, Falling for Christmas and Irish Wish.

Return to You features Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding as Lohan's male lead and the man her character is trying to find in the 2008-set movie. Lohan stars as a lawyer, who's successful in her career but unlucky in love and receives a DVD intended for Golding's character from his dying wife. Using the DVD as a road map, she attempts to track the man down. Does love follow?

Well, we can certainly assume that since Return to You is a romance, Lohan and Golding's characters will eventually catch sparks once they meet each other. What's not immediately clear is how "com" the rom-com will be given the emotional undertones, but there's sure to be some light and laughter to be had as Lohan's character searches for the man who was supposed to receive the DVD.

On paper, Return to You sounds similar to Netflix's fan-favorite romantic comedy Voicemails for Isabelle, which had a similar set-up of strangers meeting under emotional circumstances. Given how huge that movie became this summer, there's no doubt Netflix is looking for the next follow-up to steal the hearts of fans looking for their new favorite comforting romantic tearjerker.

The movie already sounds like a winner given Lohan and Golding taking the leading roles and having more than enough experience in the romance genre between them both. Also, Waters has created two of Lohan's most iconic big-screen titles and directed some of Netflix's latest rom-com hits like He's All That, Mother of the Bride, and La Dolce Villa.

As of the announcement of Return to You in September 2026, Netflix hasn't provided a timeline for how long production lasts or when the movie is targeted for release. But we can assume that since filming has been confirmed to be in progress, it will end before the end of the year. Following filming's wrap, the movie could drop on Netflix sometime in late 2027 or in 2028 depending on the timeframe.

No matter when the movie makes its way to Netflix, it's for sure going to be a huge hit for fans of Lohan, Golding, and Lohan's past work with Waters. Before Return to You marks Lohan's return to Netflix, she will be seen in Hulu's thriller limited series Count My Lies in 2027, and Golding stars in the Amazon comedy Close Personal Friends.
