Leanne season 2 locks in release date on Netflix, but there's a big change in store

Netflix announced the Leanne season 2 release date for this summer and confirmed the sitcom's big change from its breakout first season.

Before summer officially comes to an end, we will have laughed along with a brand-new season of Leanne on Netflix. The hit sitcom from comedy legend Chuck Lorre and starring comedian Leanne Morgan will return with its follow-up season later this summer, and if you're worried that there's still a long wait ahead, the countdown is on and it's much shorter than you might think.

When filming on Leanne season 2 wrapped earlier this spring, series star Kristen Johnston let it slip that the new episodes would premiere in summer 2026, a release window that had already been assumed since the first season bowed back in July 2025. Now that we know the release date, it's confirmed that we won't have waited more than a year for the sitcom to come back.

Leanne season 2 release date set for August 2026

As Netflix announced in June, Leanne season 2 premieres on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026 with all of the new episodes dropping all at once, just like the first season's release strategy. However, unlike the first season's release, Netflix has made quite the major change to the second season that most fans won't appreciate. Unfortunately, season 2 has been shortened.

Netflix tried something totally knew when Leanne debuted last year. The streaming service ordered a 16-episode first season of the sitcom, and rather than splitting the season into two releases, all of the episodes were released at once. The season's 16 episodes marked one of the streamer's largest episode counts for an original comedy series, but lightning isn't striking twice.

Sadly, the streaming service has slashed the episode count for season 2. There won't be 16 episodes this time around. Instead, the streamer has reverted to the 10-episode order that has become the new baseline normal for modern television, specifically on streaming. There will be fewer episodes, six fewer to be exact, but that doesn't mean we will be losing out on any laughs.

While that change will surely frustrated fans who were hoping for the same episode count, or even a larger episode count to keep the binge-watch going longer, Netflix isn't changing the other aspect of the release strategy. The full season will still be released all at once and not broken up into two halves as the streamer has done with past original sitcoms like The Upshaws.

But the shorter season just means that we can start our binge-watch from the beginning and, all told, we will have 26 episodes to enjoy on Aug. 27. The new season picks up after the birth of Leanne's granddaughter in the season 1 finale and she continues to put her life back together after her divorce. Now in a new relationship, she appears to have found love all over again.

In addition to the Morgan leading the cast, the main cast also includes Kristen Johnston, Celia Weston, Blake Clark, Ryan Stiles, Jayma Mays, Tim Daly, Graham Rogers, Hannah Pilkes, and Andrea Anders. But season 2 has also booked some exciting new guest stars with country music star Lainey Wilson, Mom actress, Jaime Pressly, Mike & Molly star, Billy Gardell, and Daly's sister Tyne Daly.

Leanne season 2 premieres on Thursday, Aug. 27 on Netflix.
