Leanne remains on the bubble, but there's still hope for season 3

Leanne Morgan's Netflix original sitcom Leanne returned for its second season in August 2026, and continued to bring the laughs. However, even though the series is beloved by its core audience, the comedy visibly struggled in the viewership department this time around. Being so, the longer we go with silence regarding its future, the more fans are worried about season 3.

Honestly, the concerns from aren't unfounded considering plenty of mid-budget Netflix shows appear to be dropping like flies lately. Netflix just canceled fan-favorite romantic dramas Ransom Canyon and Sweet Magnolias back-to-back. While those are hourlong shows and not sitcoms, their cancellations aren't doing much to quiet our fears about Leanne season 3.

Upon Leanne season 2's release on Aug. 27, the new episodes managed to completely miss the Global Top 10 TV Shows ranking in the season's opening weekend. The sitcom rebounded in the second season's first full week of availability, but the series only ranked on the global leaderboard for one week. Obviously, that doesn't look good on paper for the show's renewal chances.

Leanne season still has a chance of happening despite decreased viewership

But for a multi-cam sitcom, the bar Leanne needs to clear looks a lot different from even the likes of Ransom Canyon and Sweet Magnolias. The fact that the show didn't perform particularly well globally might not mean quite as much when the budget isn't nearly as high. More than anything, Leanne season 2's drop in ratings seemed to suggest the drop in episode count worked against the show.

Also, based on the sitcom not making much more impact on the Global Top 10 with the second season than first, Morgan's comedy doesn't appear to be appealing to a broader audience than her core American following. The comedian tends to tour inside the United States, so it's not unbelievable that a global reach could be harder to attain for a sitcom as American as Leanne.

There might seem like signs pointing toward cancellation, but Leanne has a number of things working for it that are still in the works. Morgan' hasn't stopped her efforts to promote the second season, with an appearance on the Shut Up Evan podcast on Netflix in September 2026. Morgan's also hosting a free online "wrap party" live stream on YouTube on Wednesday, Sept. 23.

Additionally, we have to remember that Leanne season 2 wasn't immediately announced by Netflix after the season 1 debut. The first season dropped on July 31, 2025 and season 2 was officially renewed on Sept. 8. Seeing as season 2 released on Aug. 27, we're still within that timeline that Netflix used last year to crunch the numbers and decide the show's fate.

Leanne isn't the only Netflix show still on the chopping block and awaiting word on their future. XO, Kitty and Man on Fire have been on the bubble since this spring, and Will Ferrell's golf comedy The Hawk joined them this summer. The streamer appears to be announcing news on its original series, so stay tuned for more updates and keep your fingers crossed for Leanne season 3.
