The Diplomat season 4 secures highly anticipated update ahead of 2026 release

Since The Diplomat dropped its third season on Netflix back in October 2025, fans have been waiting with bated breath for the political drama to return, especially after the shocking twist at the end. Thankfully, Netflix quickly renewed the Emmy Award-nominated series for a fourth season, which went into production shortly after season 3 made its impact on the streamer.

However, there was a time when the likelihood of The Diplomat season 4 releasing on Netflix in 2026 wasn't looking particularly good. The series filmed for a period of time that made the turnaround a tight squeeze, but the streamer wound up confirming that we wouldn't have to wait until 2027 for Kate Wyler's comeback. The fourth season will drop this year, and it just got an exciting update.

The Diplomat season 4 wraps filming and teases episode titles

As previously alluded to, The Diplomat season 4 began filming in November 2025, right after season 3's release the preceding month. Production wrapped up in full in June 2026, which was the reason that some expected the release to be pushed into the following year. Fortunately, that's not the case, though season 4 has the potential to premiere a little later than the show's usual October bow.

Once again, The Diplomat season 4 filmed in both New York City and London, but according to What's on Netflix, the upcoming season added another location to the show's passport. Additional filming took place in Florence, Italy. The cast was spotted filming in both London and Florence, as Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford were photographed on location.

In addition to the confirmation that the production process has wrapped up leading to the eventual release later this year, What's on Netflix was able to obtain the titles for each of this season's episodes. Just like seasons 1 and 3, which contained eight episodes (season 2 contained only six), season 4 will add another eight to the total and we have the slightest tease for what to expect.

These are The Diplomat season 4 episode titles, though they aren't in order of how they will be released on Netflix: "The Dead," "Pagliacci," "Phony Negroni," "Redcoats," "Special Envoy," "The Typo," "Warships," and "Windsor." Each of the titles feel very much aligned with the show, its tone, and its storytelling, which makes it difficult to parse the order or even what they could mean.

We're still a long time away from learning concrete details about The Diplomat season 4, but ahead of its fall release, Netflix should share the release date and teaser. For now, we can anticipate that the series will continue to navigate the bombshell Kate learned about Hal and Penn in the season 3 finale, that the President and VP stole the Poseidon missile, putting the administration and world in danger.

Going into season 4, The Diplomat promoted Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford, and Nana Mensah to series regulars as each of their characters will play a bigger role in the story moving forward. The series also landed its most Emmy nominations for a single season yet with seven earned for season 3, including Outstanding Drama Series and nods for Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, Janney, and Whitford.

If The Diplomat season 4 isn't ready for a release in late or mid-October, a release window the series held down for seasons 2 and 3, then we should expect Netflix to drop the new episodes sometime in November or December, at the very latest. However, after this new update, we're fairly certain that we will be heading back to the chaotic world of Kate Wyler sooner than we think.
