This Keira Knightley Christmas movie is a must-watch on Netflix (and it’s not Love Actually)

Two-time Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley made quite the comeback on Netflix this December with the release of her new spy drama series Black Doves. The series, which takes place during Christmastime, has a pulse-pounding premise that will have you perched on the edge of your seat from start to finish. And good news: There's going to be a second season!

Prior to starring in Black Doves, Knightley last starred in the Hulu movie Boston Strangler in 2023 and the AMC+ movie Silent Night in 2021. Guess which one is a Christmas movie and is currently streaming on Netflix... If you guessed Silent Night, then you guessed correctly! Unfortunately, Knightley's most iconic Christmas movie, Love Actually, isn't on Netflix this holiday season.

Unlike Love Actually, Silent Night isn't the kind of Christmas movie that will give you all the warm and fuzzy feelings usually associated with the holiday. Rather, the dark comedy features elements of horror as a married couple hosts a Christmas dinner at their home as an apocalypse breathes down their necks to take out humanity in one fell swoop. It's unsettling, but also festive.

Check out the movie's official synopsis via AMC:

"Silent Night follows parents Nell (Knightley) and Simon (Goode) who have invited their closest friends to join their family for Christmas dinner at their idyllic home in the English countryside. As the group comes together, it feels like old times – but behind all of the laughter and merriment, something is not quite right. The world outside is facing impending doom, and no amount of gifts, games or Prosecco can make mankind’s imminent destruction go away. Surviving the holidays just got a lot more complicated."

Upon release, Silent Night earned mixed reception from critics, earning the movie a 66% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The overall consensus seems to be that while the movie's plot and characters can be grating at times, the cast and overarching themes of the movie make it worth the watch. It's definitely a must-watch for both horror and Knightley fans!

In addition to Keira Knightley leading the cast as Nell, the movie also features a number of familiar faces. Matthew Goode stars alongside Knigtley as her on-screen husband Simon. The couple's son Art is played by young actor Roman Griffin Davis. Other supporting cast members that viewers will recognize include Annabelle Wallis, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Lily-Rose Depp, and Lucy Punch.

Here's the full cast featured in Silent Night:

  • Keira Knightley as Nell
  • Matthew Goode as Simon
  • Roman Griffin Davis as Arthur ("Art")
  • Hardy and Gilby Griffin Davis as Hardy and Thomas
  • Annabelle Wallis as Sandra
  • Rufus Jones as Tony
  • Davida McKenzie as Kitty
  • Sope Dirisu as James
  • Lily-Rose Depp as Sophie
  • Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Alex
  • Lucy Punch as Bella

Hopefully, Love Actually will return to Netflix next year in time for everyone's annual holiday season rewatches. (The movie is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.) On top of returning to Netflix for Black Doves season 2, Knightley will also appear in the streamer's upcoming film adaptation of the best-selling thriller novel The Woman in Cabin 10. So much to look forward to!

Netflix has dropped so many great new holiday rom-coms this year, but if you need to mix up your Christmas movie marathons with a genre different from comedy, romance, or romantic comedy, Silent Night is the perfect choice for after the kids go to sleep. It's always exciting to find a holiday movie that goes against the grain and tells a new story.
