About The Jerry Springer Show

The Jerry Springer Show focused on content that included troubled relationships that involved cheating scandals including adultery and incest. Guests of the show were mainly lower to middle-income American households who were often involved in secret relationships, including secret pregnancies and same-sex relationships.

Critics from TV Guide have proclaimed it to be the worst show due to its violent acts from guests. Springer embraced the critics calling his show “trash TV." In the 1990s, his show competed with Jenny Jones, Maury Povich, Montel Williams, and Ricki Lake.

The production of The Jerry Springer Show was first produced by Multimedia, Inc., then was picked up by NBC Universal. It was first taped in Chicago from 1991 to 2009 then in Stamford, Connecticut from 2009 to 2018. The show ran for 27 seasons where it first air on September 30, 1991, until July 26, 2018.

After the show ended in 2018, Springer then went on to do a court TV show called Judge Jerry, which was also produced by NBC Universal. The late TV talk show host had an intention of retiring while the network had pushed to retain his services.

Who was Jerry Springer?

Springer was born February 13, 1944, in the United Kingdom, and his family had immigrated to New York, where he grew up in the borough of Queens. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Tulane University in 1965 and his law degree from Northwestern University in 1968.

He started his political career as an adviser to Robert F. Kennedy’s campaign in 1968. Springer was on the city council for Cincinnati from 1972 to 1974 and then again from 1976 to 1981. He was briefly the 56th Mayor of Cincinnati from January 1, 1977, to January 1, 1978.

Prior to being a talk show host, Springer was a lawyer for the Cincinnati-based firm Frost and Jacobs then was a partner at Grinker, Sudman, and Springer. He died on April 27, 2023, from complications of cancer.

His legacy on day talk TV was considered a cultural phenomenon due to his embracing of criticism of “trash TV.” Critics have called Springer’s time on daytime television as “for better or for worse." Guests who often fought on TV had been an attraction for viewers and television audiences for entertainment reasons. Springer had once said he would never watch one episode of his show.
