Back in the '90s there were a number of iconic talk shows that became pop culture reference points for years and years to come. One of those iconic talk shows was The Jerry Springer Show, a controversial syndicated program that became known for its wild occurrences and taboo topics. If you didn't watch it, then you were certainly aware of the kind of show it was.
On Oct. 23, Netflix announced a new behind-the-scenes documentary series centered on The Jerry Springer Show and untold secrets from the set. Over 30 years after it first hit the airwaves in 1991, and nearly two years after the host's death, Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action will pull back the curtain on one of the most famous and infamous talk shows of all time
The two-part documentary series comes from director Luke Sewell and makes its premiere on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025. Fights, Camera, Action delves into the history of the show and features interviews from insiders to reveal "darker truths" about the impact of the show on its guests. According to the synopsis, the docuseries looks into the "destruction it caused."
Take a closer look at the official logline from Netflix's press release:
"This jaw-dropping, premium two-part series will tell the story of The Jerry Springer Show as it’s never been told before. Packed with extraordinary first-hand testimony and revelations from show insiders, the series explores how this daytime talk show became one of the biggest and most outrageous TV hits of the nineties. But behind the entertaining facade lay some darker truths. As we hear from the producers and ex-guests of The Jerry Springer Show, a murkier picture begins to emerge of the destruction it caused, raising renewed questions about who was responsible, and how far things should go in the name of entertainment."
Springer's show became synonymous with contention, a critically panned phenomenon that was the epitome of can't-look-away voyeurism for viewers stunned by the unbelievable subject matter, fights, and other on-screen mess. The series has come under fire for exploitation and going too far, which are questions that will be raised and explored in the Netflix docuseries.
Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action hails from Minnow Films, the production company that launched Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies and Scandal to success on Netflix earlier this year. Sewell also helmed the streamer's hit 2022 documentary Trust No One: The Hunt For The Crypto King. If these titles are any indication, the Spinger Show docuseries will surely be a juicy tell-all.
As previously mentioned, The Jerry Springer Show first premiered in September 1991 and lasted until July 2018, producing nearly 4,000 episodes across 27 seasons. The show, in spite of its various controversies and negative reception, was successful and influential. While there's nothing quite like it on television these days, its legacy remains as a totem of the '90s.
