You know you love Black Doves because, well...everyone does. The crime thriller is so magnificent, just a notch below Apple TV's Slow Horses, and that is high praise. Keira Knightley is a force worthy of earning a Golden Globe for her role. But while Black Doves makes for great fictionalized streaming, Jamie Foxx turns a harsh reality into comedy gold in his new standup special.
Foxx has flown by anything else and claimed the top spot on Netflix's top 10 shows for last week. Sure, the list is ever-changing and Foxx won't always be on top, but his special deserves to stay there for a while. He makes us cry, laugh, and empathize in What Had Happened Was...
In 2023, Foxx suffered a brain bleed that led to a serious stroke. He was in a coma for weeks, and, at times, he was not expected to recover. Not only did he overcome his health issue, but he was able to turn his turmoil into something anyone can relate to. For instance, Foxx gives credit to his daughter for coming into his hospital room and playing guitar, something that he likely loved without even fully being aware.
Jamie Foxx's new special dispatches Black Doves on Netflix's top 10 shows list
The special is only an hour long. This isn't a long diatribe on healthcare or a sermon that goes on for ages. Foxx knows his job is to make us laugh and he does that brilliantly.
Black Doves has not only been bypassed by Foxx, at least temporarily, though. The dark comedy series No Good Deed, which has a fabulous cast, including Lisa Kudrow, Ray Romano, and Luke Wilson was the second-most watched Netflix series. The show revolves around a couple in Los Angeles trying to sell their home and three families are in competition to buy it.
Sure, that sounds a bit like a reality series, but it most definitely is not. Dark comedies are all the rage at Christmas time, it seems, and you won't be disappointed by No Good Deed. Nor will you be by Jamie Foxx (and, heck...Black Doves) either.
