Heartstopper Forever release window widens with creator's latest update

There's some new information to share for Heartstopper fans about the highly anticipated wrap-up movie, but it might not be the update we were hoping for. We have a better idea of when Heartstopper Forever will be released on Netflix, and there's a fair amount of waiting still in store.

As fans know, in place of a formal fourth and final season, the fan-favorite and Emmy Award-winning teen drama series will finish its story with a movie. The feature-length series finale, which gained the fitting title Heartstopper Forever, will be based on Alice Oseman's sixth and final volume of the graphic novel series upon which its based. But the movie won't drop until after the last book.

Heartstopper Forever will release on Netflix after Volume 6

Oseman spoke at the London Book Fair on March 10 and revealed that Heartstopper Forever will begin streaming a bit after Volume 6 hits shelves. The wait makes sense since the wrap-up movie adapts the events of the final book, and releasing the movie before the book would spoil its events. You could argue that the reverse is true, too, but the book should always come before the movie.

While answering a fan's question at the book fair, Oseman confirmed the wait that's still in store for the show's ending: "It won’t be coming out before the book. It was so important to me that the book comes out first, so people can experience the end of the story in the book. The series was the adaptation, not the other way around."

Heartstopper Volume 6 releases on Thursday, July 2 in the United Kingdom and on Tuesday, July 7 in the United States, which means we likely won't be watching the book come to life onscreen until at least late summer 2026 at the earliest, but a fall release will also be in the cards. But we can count out a concurrent release with the book, meaning Heartstopper Forever won't drop in early July.

It's been confirmed for a 2026 release, but exactly when hasn't been revealed. Oseman teased that post-production on the movie is nearing completion: "We are literally days away from it being finished. We are doing the final little bits of VFX and animation, and hopefully by the end of next week is going to be sent to be dubbed in various languages and quality-checked by Netflix, but my work on it will be done."

Heartstopper Forever began filming in June 2025 and wrapped production by late July 2025. The quick production turnaround makes sense given that the series often spend just a few months out of the year filming before ultimately releasing on Netflix. Season 3 premiered back in October 2024, marking the longest wait between new content for the series.

By the time fans binge-read the culmination of Nick and Charlie's love story when Volume 6 arrives in July, we will be more than ready to watch the show's ensemble say goodbye in the bittersweet wrap-up movie. Hopefully, Netflix will announce the release date, or at least a release window, ahead of or around the time of the book's release. We'll have to stay patient for more details!
