A classic '90s comedy is climbing the Netflix Top 10 this week, and it's definitely not a coincidence!
Happy Gilmore surged to No. 4 on the Netflix Top 10 this week with more than 4 million views, according to Netflix. It's no surprise that fans are revisiting Adam Sandler's hit comedy from 1996 with Happy Gilmore 2 coming to Netflix this week.
That's right; Happy Gilmore 2 premieres on Friday, July 25. I know Sandler fans of many generations are super excited for the sequel, which was announced in the spring of last year.
Sandler will reprise his role as Happy Gilmore, nearly 30 years after the first movie premiered in theaters. He's not alone, either! Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, Kevin Nealon, and Ben Stiller will return for Happy Gilmore 2.
The sequel also stars Benny Safdie, Bad Bunny, Dennis Dugan, Kym Whitley, and Sunny Sandler, along with a bunch of huge stars, celebrities, and golfers.
Set nearly 30 years after the first film, Happy returns to the world of professional golf after getting into some financial trouble involving his family. While older, perhaps wiser, and with a family to care for now, it sure looks like he's still the old Happy.
If you're watching Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix this Friday, it's a great time to watch the original film on Netflix! I have a feeling that No. 4 is not where this movie is going to settle. By the end of the week when Happy Gilmore 2 premieres, the original film will probably be No. 1 on Netflix.
Sandler's movies are always super popular on Netflix, even the lowest-rated of the bunch. Happy Gilmore, though, has to be considered one of Sandler's best and most iconic comedies. Critically, it's also one of Sandler's highest-rated projects, boasting a 63% critical approval rating with an 85% fan approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Happy Gilmore was actually supposed to leave Netflix this month, but it appears Netflix worked out a deal to keep the movie available to stream for the time being. The movie still has the "Leaving Soon" tag on the title card, but there's no date actually listed, so it appears the movie is here to stay.
We'll share more news about Happy Gilmore 2 when we find out! Stay tuned for more information about Sandler's upcoming sequel. Hey, maybe if it's a hit, Happy Gilmore 3 is possible. We'll just have to wait and see!
