If you aren't looking forward to the latest adaptation of Mary Shelley's 1818 gothic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, after seeing the trailer during Netflix Tudum Live 2025, then you must just not like the story. That is OK. You have that right.

For the rest of us, any time Guillermo del Toro chooses to do goth or horror, it is going to be worth a look. His Netflix series Cabinet of Curiosities was sublime, and Pan's Labyrinth was high-end horror based on an actual, terrible event. In other words, there is no way the new Frankenstein is not going to be good.

Oscar Issacs as the good doctor seems a perfect fit. He is going to bring enough swagger, but also vulnerability, to the role, which is what it needs. He also looks positively manic obsessive in the trailer.

Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein looks amazing and is coming to Netflix soon

The story, of course, surrounds Dr. Victor Frankenstein bringing parts of dead people alive into one creature. Ultimately, the creator and the creature are both doomed, but how they get to the end is why the book is worth reading and the movie is likely worth watching.

Del Toro directs the film. The release date is set for November, but we do not know the exact date yet.

The trailer, which you can see below, promises that the visuals are going to be stunning, as expected. There is certainly enough goth to go around, but the only issue is how the Monster will speak. At the end of the trailer, it does, and well...you can decide for yourself.
