After its premiere on Netflix back in 2020, Outer Banks became a viral global sensation, and with the release of its fourth season this fall, the teen adventure series remains one of the most popular shows on the streamer. While you wait for the forthcoming fifth and final season, you might be looking for another show or two to binge-watch.
In Outer Banks, the Pogues go on dangerous treasure hunting adventures that find them in deep trouble with their intimidating enemies as well as the law. There's honestly nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of OBX out there that isn't supernatural, but a lot of shows tackle similar themes, whether its class, relationships, friendships, mortality, and more.
Looking for a lineup of shows to binge-watch until the Pogues return for their last ride? Here's four good shows that should scratch the teen drama and action-adventure itch!
Stranger Things
If you think about it, Stranger Things was sort of the blueprint for Outer Banks. A group of teenagers embarking on unbelievable adventures, riding right into danger together, looking death in the face at every turn, and quickly turning into a found family. The Pogues and the Hawkins gang are cut from the same cloth.
The obvious difference between the two series is obviously their subgenre. Outer Banks doesn't have any sci-fi elements, but if you love one series, there's a very high chance you will love the other. Also, fun fact: OBX stars Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline have small roles early on in Stranger Things. Any Outer Banks fans who somehow haven't watched Stranger Things should definitely give it a binge-watch before its own fifth and final season!
Territory
Netflix recently released the Australian neo-Western series Territory, which became a modest hit for the streamer. In the series, a prominent ranching family wades into turmoil when one of their own dies and leaves their cattle station's succession plans up in the air. Suddenly, rivals close in to make a move on their land, prompting a deadly set of circumstances.
Sure, Territory doesn't have treasure hunting and doesn't focus mainly on younger characters, but there's still a sense of action and urgency in its storytelling that Outer Banks fans will recognize and enjoy. Territory does also have a few younger characters with love triangles to keep you hooked. It's a surprising and thrilling ride full of unexpected shootouts, twists, and deaths.
Gossip Girl
Gossip Girl returned to Netflix in the United States in October 2024 and immediately entered and remained on the daily top 10 most popular shows ranking. The CW teen drama is just a show that has maintained its popularity, even nearing the two-decade mark. It's beloved enough to chart on Netflix even though it's been available on Max since its Netflix departure. Think about that!
Okay, so, yeah, Gossip Girl and Outer Banks couldn't be more dissimilar. Do you think Chuck Bass could survive one single day on Poguelandia? There's no action or adventure in Gossip Girl, but all of the teen drama you love in OBX has been turned up to 100 on the Upper East Side. (They even have their own Kooks and Pogues!) Ultimately, both shows feature their setting as a main character, creating an exciting escape from reality you can't deny.
Lost
No, Lost isn't included on this list just because the Pogues were stranded on an island at the end of season 2 and the beginning of season 3... but it's not not one of the reasons. Sure, the Pogues were saved much sooner than the airplane crash survivors in ABC's Lost, but both series center on characters with fight, drive, and unbelievably sharp survival instincts.
All six seasons of Lost are available to stream on Netflix, though they will eventually be removed sometime in 2025. Outer Banks fans, if you haven't given the mythology-heavy series a watch, you will likely discover an entertaining watch among its 121. There's a reason it's one of the most talked about shows of all time. Now's your chance to find out why!
