It took a while, but Netflix has finally greenlit Geek Girl for a second season. There were reasons for the wait, and we will get into those in just a minute. But fans should know that there don't appear to be any issues with cast changes or who will ultimately run the show.
Most of the main players return, and that should lead to season 2 success.
After all, there is no doubt that season 1 was a massive success. The series reached the top 10 in 89 different countries. The show also reached number two on Netflix's Global Top 10, a fantastic thing for an English-language show.
A second season of Geek Girl is definitely coming on Netflix
If you haven't seen Geek Girl, here is what you should know. It is based on a series of young adult books by Holly Smale about a British teenager who is book smart but then gets discovered as a potential runway model. Her life obviously changes, and she has to learn to deal with that.
Smale also co-writes the series, which she created with Jessica Ruston. Both also serve as executive producers.
Is the plotline a bit of a stretch? Sure. But this is a YA series we're talking about, and a leap into reality is sometimes needed. The main character, Harriet Manners (played with delicious fun by Emily Carey), is not tall enough to be a classic runway model. Harriet is only 5'4" and not 6 feet tall, as many models are.
The rest of the cast includes Jemima Rooper (Annabel Manners), Emmanuel Imani (Wilber Evans), Tim Downie (Richard Manners), and Liam Woodrum (Nick Park). The second season is expected to be directed by Declan O’Dwyer.
So, why did it take Netflix 11 months to decide to renew the hit show? The answer is quite logical.
Corus produced the first season. That company built up as much as $1 billion in debt and had to cut staff. Expecting the company to successfully create a second season of Geek Girl was probably expecting too much.
Another Canadian company, Boat Rocker, will handle production and distribution for season 2. Netflix likely waited until production issues were cleared up before doing the obvious and re-upping Geek Girl. Filming for the second season is set to begin this summer, and the new season is expected to air in 2026.
