The year 2024 has been one of the most unforgettable years in original content that has audiences in awe including a blast from the past. Prominent talents like Lisa Kudrow, Ray Romano, Eddie Murphy, Nicole Kidman, and Javier Bardem have shown their performance at the highest level.

It is worth nothing that some shows and documentaries have been of interest, but controversial.

Action, drama, and murder mystery have set the tone for the original Netflix content with interesting storylines. Prominent talent still brings their authenticity to the film to set the stage for interest along with a well-rounded cast.

The top five pieces of original content on Netflix in 2024

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F

A blast from the past as Murphy reprised his role as Axel Foley from the Beverly Hills Cop series. He teams up again with his old pals Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, and Bronson Pinchot where they are brought back to reprise their roles as Billy Rosewood, John Taggart, and Serge. Kevin Bacon, Taylor Paige, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were added as new talents to their modern-day roles.

Time has flown by 30 years after Beverly Hills Cop 3, where this time Axel returns to Beverly Hills this time as he is informed his daughter's life is threatened. It’s the same Axel with a Detroit Lions jacket who goes after the bad guys involving collateral damage.

For those who love the 80s and the 90s, this movie will bring back memories of Murphy’s stellar performance during his prime. The 2020s may be different this time since the franchise was created, but the film reminisces both Foley as a character and the untold stories of the past.

No Good Deed

If you’re also looking for talent as a blast from the past, No Good Deed is a perfect example of Kudrow and Romano reprising their acting personas to different roles in the show. From their past shows, Friends and Everybody Loves Raymond, they still bring their laughs and humor to the audiences, including being surrounded by a stellar cast.

Kudrow and Romano play Lydia and Paul Morgan, a Los Angeles based couple who are attempting to sell their home due to the mystery of their son. Three family buyers and a developer are attempting to purchase the home. Yet, the death of their son is a mystery that has the buyers guessing and spooked as the truth is yet to be uncovered.

The shows give an insight into what life is like in the Los Angeles suburbs and how competitive it can be to purchase a home. The creator, Liz Feldman (Dead to Me), does a great job of keeping the audience guessing about incidents that have happened to the Morgans’ son. No Good Deed may have its dark moments, but Kudrow and Romano keep the humor intact in the storyline with some funny and witty moments.

Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies, & Scandal

One of the most controversial documentaries, Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal, tells the story of the data breach of The Ashley Madison Agency (Ashley Madison) exposing users on the site.

Ashley Madison is an online dating service based in Canada that caters to married couples who are involved in extramarital affairs as they please. Significant others who were found to be on the website had resulted in divorces, breakups, and struggles to repair a marriage.

This controversial website will make married couples and lovers think twice about having an Ashley Madison account often leading to temptation. Unlike other dating websites including Match.com or eHarmony, Ashley Madison uses a credit service as opposed to a SaaS model. Credit service is a pay-per-view model that limits direct messaging and chatting.

Love will always have its perks and territories, but this documentary can greatly have an impact on anyone who’s willing to join the website. There’s a lot that the audience can learn from the data breach including married and unmarried couples.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story

If the audience is looking for shows based on a true story, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story will give a glimpse of the true crime story. As social media gives light to Lyle (Nicolas Alexander Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch) Menendez’s crimes for the murder of their parents, Jose (Javier Bardem) and Kitty (Chloe Sevigny) Menendez.

The show may not go into in-depth details of the Menendez brothers’ claims of sexual abuse like the Netflix documentary, The Menendez Brothers, which reveals the dark secrets about the dysfunction of the Beverly Hills Family. For the audience who remember the O.J. Simpson trial, this overshadowed the brothers’ case in the mid-1990s after the first court case was a mistrial.

Social media may benefit the Menendez brothers in order to get their real story out in order to turn the narrative around, Monsters tells the story of the aftermath of the brothers who tried to hide the truth of their parents’ murder. The tragedy remains controversial, social media has been empowered to persuade true crime fans to influence the justice system.

The Perfect Couple

The perfect drama is based on a murder that took place before a wedding was supposed to take place. Nicole Kidman (Days of Thunder) and Live Schreiber (Ray Donovan) lead an up-and-coming cast including Dakota Fanning (Man on Fire) that has kept the audience thinking in a perfect setting.

In the typical murder mystery storyline, everyone is a suspect and innocent till proven guilty. Bound to get married, Amelia (Eve Hewson) and Benji (Billy Howle) are engaged until a murder happens on the big day. The creator of the film, Jenna Lamia (The Fighter), sets the tone perfectly performing the logic and how the murder took place.

From the lavish lifestyle to the island life, The Perfect Couple sets the tone to understand different stories and conflicts within the characters. Kidman’s patriarchy in the film shines a light as a fictional public figure on how common people marrying into prominent families can be complicated by being around the center of controversy.
