You know it and you love it, right? Emilia Perez is likely the best comedy/musical/drama that has come out over the last year, and thankfully, we get to see it on Netflix. The movie won four Golden Globe awards recently, including Best Comedy or Musical Film. Zoe Saldaña won as well for Best Supporting Actress. But the film is likely not done winning awards, either.
This week, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards were announced and Emilia Perez received several nods. SAG-AFTRA does not really announce a "best film," but they do "best cast," which means that many times a film is nominated at the SAGs, it also has a very good chance of being nominated for Academy Awards.
The Netflix original was given SAG nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role (Karla Sofia Gascón), and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role (Saldaña). All are worthy of winning, of course, though based on the Golden Globes, possibly Saldaña has the best chance to take home a trophy.
Emilia Perez getting nominated for several SAG awards could be a good thing for the Oscars
The difference between what Emilia Perez won at the Golden Globes in terms of best film was that the foreign press split their categories. In other words, while the Netflix movie will still have a decent chance of being nominated and winning at the Oscars, it will also be up against dramas, not just comedies. Most importantly, comedies and musicals sometimes get less love from Academy voters than dramas.
The other films nominated in the Outstanding Cast category could be a reflection of the movies nominated for Best Film at the Oscars. Besides Emilia Perez, the nominees included the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, as well as Anora, Conclave, and Wicked. The last film listed there might also keep Emilia Perez from winning Best Film.
While Oscar voters, which includes a directors wing as well as an actors wing, do not mind giving a win to a musical, there is a good chance that two musicals (Wicked and Emilia Perez, of course) might be among the Best Film nominees which may mean that voters are split between the two, in which case neither would bring home the most important trophy.
