If you have seen Zero Day on Netflix, you know it has a complete arc. Spoiler alert: The bad guys are found out. That is likely nothing you wouldn't know heading into a show like that. The trick is not knowing who the bad guys truly are. That is part of what made the series so fun.
Only, a lot of people did not like it. Forget the viewers watching because there are plenty, and that is really all that matters, but the critics were almost divided in half. So were viewers once they saw the entire series. That still did not keep people from watching, however.
Viewers mean money. Maybe those few people left who were not already subscribers of Netflix signed up just to see the series and Robert De Niro's new project. But it is doubtful people jumped ship simply because they did not like the show. One series is very unlikely to make or break a show.
A Season 2 of Zero Day should not be ruled out
And just because the series is billed as "limited" and has an ending that seems, well...ended, does not mean a season two will not appear. Shogun on Hulu was a limited series and it will return for a second season. The White Lotus on Max has now had three seasons. There is no reason to think it won't have a fourth.
If something can make money for a streamer or television network then that entity is going to explore every avenue to see if more seasons can happen. Maybe the plot and cast are different, but there is a tie somehow between the seasons. Anything is possible.
It would be easy for the creators to say, "No, we are done. There won't be anymore." But De Niro and co-creator Noah Oppenheimer did not dismiss the thought of future seasons in a recent talk with The Wrap. The door was left wide open.
Oppenheimer said, "I think we all feel like we have told what is right now a complete story. That being said, it’s a group of people that happen to like each other a great deal and we all had a great experience making it. So (co-creators) Eric (Newman), and I and Mike (Schmidt) often will chat about what would happen. What does happen to Alexandra Mullen, what does happen to Speaker Dreyer the next day? But there’s no active plan at this moment."
De Niro also added, "I don’t know whether it would be a continuation of the situation with the character. It could very well be an interesting second part of what we’re going through. Of course, there’s a lot of ways to go and everything is moving so fast, but it’s not out of the question. I mean, with Eric, and Noah Oppenheim and Mike Schmidt, they could very, very easily, in some ways, come up with something that’s special. We all would agree on that."
So while a Zero Day Season 2 might not currently be planned, there is enough wiggle room for something to be written for another season or five. This is especially true if the money is right.
