Warning: This post contains spoilers from Outer Banks season 5 from this point forward.
Outer Banks season 5 made its premiere on Netflix and hit all of our watch lists with a bang. We have been waiting almost two years to join the Pogues on their final globe-trotting adventure. Going into the final season, there are still so many questions left to be answered, like whether their revenge mission against Groff is successful, if they get the Blue Crown, and who ends up together.
Within the Pogues, there are two central couples left after JJ's death last season. Kiara spends the final season grieving his loss and fighting to avenge his death. The rest of the Pogues feel his loss, too, but the couples also go through their own ups and downs. For John B and Sarah, becoming parents and building their lives is a major concern. For Cleo and Pope, it's completely different.
Cleo and Pope's relationship remains strong at the beginning of Outer Banks season 5, though Pope's reeling from the loss of JJ combined with his guilt and regrets after killing one of the Corsairs. Following their adventure in Croatia, the Pogues get arrested and sent back home, but for Cleo, that means getting deported back to the Bahamas. Does that prevent a happily ever after?

Here's what happens to Cleo and Pope in Outer Banks season 5
Well, first things first: Yes, Cleo and Pope end up together in Outer Banks season 5. But it's not an easy road to get to that point at all. After getting deported and not returning to Kildare with the Pogues, Cleo later makes her way back to North Carolina shortly after. But that doesn't mean that's where their story ends. Cleo's immigration status still hangs over her head.
When Pope suggests that they could get married to get her green card and they could live together while he goes to medical school, Cleo isn't blow away by his matter-of-fact, logical "proposal." But at that point, the stress and unknown about the future was really eating at all of them. However, it wasn't even the beginning of Cleo and Pope's worries about their future.
The Pogues attempt to escape on a plane to Azerbaijan, but Cleo sacrifices herself to create a distraction for the police. She blows up John B's car (rest in peace, Twinkie!) to prevent Shoupe from getting to them on the runway. Cleo races back to the plane on a motorcycle, with Pope reaching out to get her on the plane. Unfortunately, she doesn't make it and gets left behind.
Cleo gets deported to the Bahamas for the second time in Outer Banks season 5, but this time, she's being kicked out of the country for good. She's given threats that if she tries to get back into the country, she will be arrested and anyone harboring her will be, too. Later, during the hurricane in the series finale, she tries to ask Pope if he'd move to the Bahamas to be with her, but he doesn't hear.
With his earnings from the Royal Merchant gold the Pogues win, Pope buys an engagement ring and surprises Cleo with a proper proposal in the Bahamas. He also uses his newfound wealth to pay Cleo's way into becoming an American citizen so she can come back to Kildare. While Cleo and Pope aren't married by the end of the series, they are still happily together and living in Tannyhill.
