Stranger Things 5 part 1 has officially dropped on Netflix, and unsurprisingly, fans rushed to binge all four episodes the moment they hit the platform. While the newest season brings back all of the Hawkins gang, it also introduces several new faces. One of those new characters is Derek Turnbow, played by Jake Connelly.
Now, Derek might not end up being your favorite character. However, there's no denying that he immediately grabs the spotlight with every scene he’s in. He’s brash. He’s mouthy. He’s chaotic. And yet, somehow, he becomes one of the most compelling characters in Stranger Things 5 part 1.
Spoilers are ahead from Stranger Things 5.

Derek Turnbow is one of Stranger Things 5's funniest characters
Derek is a young kid and a classmate of Holly Wheeler's. The best way to describe him is that he's the classic troublemaking, bratty kid character. He's the type of character who causes problems and has a bad attitude toward everyone around him. Lucas even describes his entire family as a "menace."
We briefly meet Derek in the first episode when he's shown bullying Holly on the playground. But he becomes more involved in the season's plot starting from episode 3. After Vecna kidnaps Holly and brings her to the Upside Down, he sets his sights on Derek next. He even informs Holly of his plans.
However, Vecna's plans are thwarted after Will figures out that his next target is Derek. Now the Hawkins gang must prevent Derek from being taken and, hopefully, rescue Holly from Vecna's clutches. So, how do they go about doing this? Well, they drug Derek and his entire family to kidnap him. After Derek finally comes to, he finds himself tied up in a barn. Joyce tries to calm him down, but Derek, confused, frightened, and still full of his usual brash attitude, lashes out after she frees him.
He then runs to the top of a platform in the barn and yells out a pretty inappropriate comment at Robin. He tells her, "Suck my fat one!" I'm telling you this kid is completely unfiltered, but you can't help but laugh at his audacity and be drawn into every scene he’s in. Derek calms down more after the Hawkins gang wrestles him into their plan to rescue the other kids that the military has taken.
There's this brief, funny scene where he hits one kid on the head with a ruler because she hasn't gotten up to go to the restroom to escape the military base. Then, there's another scene where he yells at a soldier for not being a good protector. He literally tells the soldier, "And no disrespect meant, but you and your men can't protect sh*t."
It’s little scenes like this that cement Derek as a legendary scene-stealer. From smacking a kid with a ruler to calling out a soldier for being utterly useless, Derek’s audacity knows no bounds, and we can't wait to see how things play out for him in the next episodes. Hopefully, they don't kill him off because he's definitely one of the characters who brings the comedic relief!
Stranger Things 5 part 2 is slated to be released on Netflix on Dec. 25.
