Black Doves season 2 is one of the best Netflix new releases of 2026. The hit spy series starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw pulls off a high-stakes mystery that comes together with several major reveals in the Black Doves season 2 finale.

The new season begins with the death of several Black Doves agents, specifically involving a dangerous operation that went all wrong in Berlin in 1988 involving Wildflower, the code name for Reed (Sarah Lancashire).

The truth about that operation comes to the surface in Black Doves season 2, and it sets the stage for a major showdown in the season 2 finale.

What is Kestrel?

In 1988, Reed was embedded within an activist organization known as Kestrel. She had a daughter with Franz, the leader of the organization. Franz was planning to leave Germany and take Reed and her daughter, Vita, with him to Amsterdam to continue to grow the organization. Reed, though, was in love with Peter, her mission lead with the Black Doves, and she was tired of being undercover for so long.

She crafted a plot that would get her out of Berlin once and for all. She told Peter that Franz was planning a terrorist attack. The Black Doves wouldn't want that to happen, so they killed all the Kestrel members. Reed got cold feet about killing Franz and tried to convince him to leave with Vita, but he wouldn't. Then, Peter showed up, killed Franz, and needed the evidence of the attack to send. Well, when he found out that Reed lied, he tried to kill her, too, but she killed him instead.

In the chaos, Vita escaped, and Reed panicked and fled, leaving Vita behind.

As we find out, Franz actually survived the incident, and he found Vita. Together, they began blackmailing Alexi Chernov, a Russian statesman who was a former KGB officer. He was going to defect to the United States with Kestrel's help.

Franz and Vita built Kestrel back up with the mission of taking down the Black Doves, and in season 2, they are ready to do that.

What was Kestrel's plan?

So, the goal was to take down the Black Doves, but it was much bigger than that. Vita and Franz planned to frame the Black Doves for the terrorist attacks, murders, and the killing of Prime Minster Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan) at the hand of his wife, Helen (Keira Knightley), a spy for the Black Doves.

Over the course of the season, Vita and Patrick (Sam Riley) got Sam (Ben Whishaw) to kill a bunch of Black Doves agents to cause infighting among the group. Then, they had a plan to storm Black Doves headquarters before the Peace Summit and force Helen, by kidnapping her kids, to kill her husband and then reveal her true identity to authorities, which would then open up the truth about the Black Doves to the world.

They used Dani (Agnes O'Casey), a miffed Black Doves agent reserved for desk duty after a fight with Helen in season 1, to infiltrate the organization and gain access to other agents and their identities.

Helen thwarts Kestrel's plan with the help of Sam, Laila, Williams, and Eleanor

At the Peace Summit, the Kestrel agents kidnapped Cecile Mason (Neve Campbell0, a US diplomat, and Katia Chernov (Sylvia Hoeks), and brought them to Black Doves HQ where multiple people, including Cecile were executed.

Well, as it turns out, Reed's daughter, Vita, is actually Katia, the wife of Alexi Chernov (Gornan Kostic0. She is the reason all of this is happening, and it's her plan to pin all of this on the Black Doves, which will destroy the organization and ruin all their lives.

Do you think Helen Webb is going to let that happen? No!

When Kestrel takes over Black Doves HQ, Laila (Ambika Mod), Williams (Ella Lily Hyland), and Eleanor (Gabrielle Creevy) storm the building and give them hell. They kill Vita in the process but not before she gets a moment with her mom, Reed, to ask some questions.

While all that's happening, Vita has laid a trap for Helen. She's convinced Marie (Molly Chesworth), the nanny of Helen and Wallace's kids, to kidnap them basically. The kids won't be harmed, Vita says, if Helen kills Wallace. Thankfully, Helen thinks quickly on her feet, and she makes it seem like she kills Wallace.

Sam shows up, and they steal the Prime Minister's car, after kicking him out, too, of course, and rescue Helen's kids from the zoo. Helen kills Marie because of course she does!

Crisis averted, for the most part!

How does the Black Doves season 2 ending set up season 3?

Well, this is pretty clear, but we'll walk through it. First of all, Netflix has not renewed Black Doves for season 3, but that's to be expected. It's early in the process, but the good news is that season 2 definitely sets up the third season.

At the end of season 2, Reed reveals that the Black Doves as an organization have taken heavy losses, and it's basically her and Mr. Conteh at the top of the organization right now. They need to rebuild quickly.

We also see at the end of the season that Kestrel is still alive, too. Patrick bumps into Helen and warns her, in fewer words, that they're still coming for them to take them down.

Reed understands this, and so does Helen. Instead of being a normal spy and wife of the Prime Minister moving forward, Helen wants a promotion. She wants to be equals with Reed and Mr. Conteh. Reed accepts that offer, and she basically confirms that Helen will have a different role in the Black Doves moving forward.

That's all but confirmation that Helen will still be working with the Black Doves in the future.

At the very end of the season, Wallace is ready to learn the truth about Helen's identity. The season ends with him asking Helen's real name, so he's about to get the full story. How he reacts will determine where this story goes in season 3. If he's cool with it, well, that could mean a lot!

We also have the whole MI5 investigation to worry about for Helen, too. They know she isn't who she says she is, and now, the Prime Minister might be involved in a cover-up attempt for a spy and assassin. That's quite interesting going forward.

Of course, we can't forget about Sam. He's off in Italy again for now, and I think that's the big takeway. It's a temporary fix for him. He won't stay gone for long.

Last but not least, Williams and Eleanor are officially dating, and they're also quite cool with Laila. This trio is fantastic, and I need to see them all return in Black Doves season 3.

We'll share more news and notes about season 3 as we find out! Hopefully, we don't have to wait too long for Netflix to make the right call and renew the series very soon.
