Netflix's new original crime comedy series Big Mistakes brings Dan Levy back to television for the first time since his Emmy Award-winning show Schitt's Creek ended. He returns to comedy television with quite the bang, as the show's co-creator and star reveals a whole new side of himself in the hilarious and unexpected series full of crime and surprises.

Big Mistakes begins as the Nicky (Dan Levy) and Morgan's (Taylor Ortega) prepares to say goodbye to their grandmother, who's dying in the hospital. Tasked by their mother Linda (Laurie Metcalf) to buy their grandma a gift, Nicky and Morgan shop at a small store and tangle with its worker Yusuf (Boran Kuzum) before Morgan secretly shoplifts a diamond necklace. That's their first mistake.

They soon learn that Yusuf needs the necklace back, and despite their efforts to retrieve it from their grandmother's neck before she's buried, the necklace ends up underground. Nicky and Yusuf are now caught up in organized crime with their lives on the line at every turn. But the first season doesn't end how you might imagine it to, as an unpredictable twist reveals who was actually pulling the strings.

Nicky and Morgan learn who's been in charge the whole time

Big Mistakes season 1 ends with Linda winning the mayoral election, and Annette (Elizabeth Perkins) throwing her a grand celebration party at her home. Annette is the mother of Morgan's fiancé Max (Jack Innanen) who is supposedly in real estate. However, it's revealed that Annette has been the leader of the crime ring the whole time, and she knew that Nicky and Morgan were involved.

During the party, Annette place the necklace — yes, the necklace — around Morgan's neck. Annette was the one they needed to get the necklace back to, the one bossing around everyone else who had been threatening Nicky and Morgan. Just when Nicky and Morgan thought they were out and could ignore the new burner phones they received, they are now beholden to Annette.

It's also assumed that Annette fixed the election in Linda's favor. The election had ended with a tie, but her opponent ended up conceding, something we learned he probably would never do. Annette now has the entire Morelli family in her pocket. She's likely the reason that Nicky and Morgan's lives were spared in the massacre that took place in Miami.

If Big Mistakes season 2 happens, Perkins would obviously play a much larger role as Annette. She still has her hooks in Nicky and Morgan, and their intention to leave the crime world behind is no longer an option. Morgan also can't break off her engagement with Max. Annette holds all the cards and welcomes them as part of her family in more ways than one.

While the first season technically ends in a way that provides some closure to Nicky and Morgan's current status, seeing as they are spared and set free by Yusuf, the season finale also leaves you wanting more. The ending could be classified as a cliffhanger since a huge bombshell was dropped, but there aren't concrete questions that desperately need to be answered.

A second season of Big Mistakes would further open up Nicky and Morgan's involvement in the world of organized crime as orchestrated by Annette. Their secret double life that they fell into by accident has now dangerously consumed their existence. Let's keep our fingers crossed that the hilarious and action-packed series lands a renewal and the misadventures continue in season 2!
