There has been some controversy surrounding the series, and that is to be expected with the sensitive nature of the story. Overall, the show has helped people start discussing bullying, harassment, sexual assault, depression, and suicide, and I think that is a good thing. Even if the series is flawed in a number of ways, advancing the conversation is important.
According to NBC News, mental health experts believe this show could be detrimental to the wellbeing of some individuals. They claim the series “glorifies suicide.” I think we all know that was not the show’s intention, but it’s possible that the show can be triggering for some viewers.
The issues presented in 13 Reasons Why are very serious. If you or someone you know needs emotional support, is suffering from depression and thoughts of suicide, and/or could use someone to talk to, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or the Crisis Text Line at 741-741.
