Picture a Rubik’s cube. Now picture a Rubik’s cube-like puzzle box that if solved, unleashes the worst of Hell’s creatures. Clive Barker struck horror gold with the 1987 release of Hellraiser based off of his own novel called The Hellbound Heart.

Hellraiser is widely known as the scariest film ever released out of Britain. The demonic and dark imagery this film brings to the table is near the top of all horror movies. The leader of the underworld “Cenobites” is known as Pinhead. Pinhead is known throughout the world as one of the most terrifying villains in a horror film of all time.

The Hellraiser franchise churned out movie after movie for more than a few decades because of the success of the first film. None of the sequels ever reached the level of critical acclaim as the original, so if there is a must see in the series, it’s Barker’s first movie in the franchise.

Hellraiser strayed from other 1980’s horror films that had elements of cheap humor. There is nothing funny about this seriously scary flick.
