No. 38 – Adventureland  (2009)

Written by: Greg Mottola

Directed by: Greg Mottola

Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds, Bill Hader, and Kristen Wiig

Adventureland is an interesting movie in the sense that I’m not entirely sure how good of a movie it actually is. Is it funny? In a way. Is it serious? Kind of, in certain parts of the film. Yet, it still remains a really interesting film worth watching for those of us looking for a coming-of-age movie that doesn’t require too heavy of an emotional investment from us.

The story follows James (Eisenberg), a recent college graduate who finds out his family doesn’t have enough money to support his trip to Europe and, therefore, he is forced to find a summer job at an amusement park. He meets Em (Stewart), whom he instantly has a connection with, yet Em is having an affair with the park’s technician, Mike (Reynolds). Accompanied by several other love story lines, Adventureland is a movie about growing up, as well as the different experiences with each, have with the people we choose to love.

The movie has a quirky set of supporting characters and it’s a testament to Greg Mottola that he managed to spot the talent in Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig before they became movie stars in their own right. Although the movie doesn’t succeed as well as it should as an effective love story, it’s still a quaint, small film that makes for a great weekend film.
