A Man on the Inside cast adds Virgin River, SNL, and Parks and Rec stars for final season

Charles Nieuwendyk might not be back with his latest undercover case this fall, but he's already getting back to work behind the scenes. Netflix announced on Sept. 23 with a photo of Ted Danson on set that A Man on the Inside season 3 has officially started filming. But that's not the only news the streaming service dropped about the comedy's upcoming new season.

Along with the announcement that the third season had started production, Netflix also announced that A Man on the Inside season 3 will now be the show's final season. Following this season's wrap and eventual drop on Netflix, there won't be a fourth season, which means we can expect all of the characters' storylines to come to a natural and satisfying close by the end of season 3.

Following the final season announcement, creator Michael Schur released a statement:

"This series began with a retiree taking a chance at a new life. By answering a help wanted ad and venturing out into the world, Charles Nieuwendyk made his world bigger and proved that life only slows down if you let it. We are thrilled to be able to conclude his journey with one final chapter, as embodied by the great Ted Danson, who I am legally required to refer to as a ‘National Treasure.'"

A Man on the Inside season 3 cast gains new guest stars

In addition to kicking off the final season's production, Netflix used the occasion to share the new faces joining the cast, and while they might be new faces to the show, they are all familiar faces we have seen on screen and stage before. Thankfully, with the casting announcement, we have also gleaned what to expect from the season 3 mystery that Charles will be tackling.

A Man on the Inside has added Annette O'Toole, Bernadette Peters, Christopher McDonald, Diedrich Bader, Jessica St. Clair, Nick Offerman, Rachel Dratch, and Stephen Root to the season 3 cast in recurring roles. The new cast members join returning stars Ted Danson, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, Stephanie Beatriz, Eugene Cordero, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sally Struthers and Mary Steenburgen.

Of course, O'Toole is known for her role as Hope McCrea on Netflix's beloved romantic drama series Virgin River, which also returns with a new season next year. Peters has been seen in a number of television and film roles outside of her work in theatre, McDonald most recently appeared in Happy Gilmore 2 and Hacks, and Bader starred in The Drew Carey Show, American Housewife, and more.

St. Clair has popped up in a number of supporting roles in addition to her starring role in the underrated comedy Playing House, Offerman reteams with his Parks and Recreation boss Schur, SNL alum Dratch is sure to chew some scenery, and Root is coming off of his Emmy Award win for his supporting role in the breakout hit Apple TV comedy series Widow's Bay.

It's a stacked cast for the show's final season, which appears to take place in the world of San Francisco's high society as Peters' character Coco Van Beck hires Charles to look into who could be sabotaging the charity work she's leading. The most exciting new character might be Root's, who plays Charles' estranged brother Dave, who's back to stir the pot.

When Netflix renewed the series for season 3, the streaming service didn't indicate that this would be the final season. Perhaps during the writing process, Schur and the writers found an organic ending for Charles, his friends, and family that tied the show up in bow. But the writing had also been on the wall after the second season arrived with less than stellar viewership numbers last fall.
