A Man on the Inside season 3 filming update signals unfortunate release delay

As it turns out, Charles Nieuwendyk's next undercover investigation will be talking a little bit longer to make its way to Netflix. Ted Danson's fan-favorite Netflix original comedy series A Man on the Inside has left fans on the hook and waiting for its third season after the second season came to an end last November and offered some teases about what's coming up ahead.

A Man on the Inside season 3 wasn't renewed by Netflix until February 2026, which already pushed the comedy a bit back in terms of getting started with writing and production. Since its premiere in November 2024, the comedy from Michael Schur has released new seasons on an annual cadence. Granted, there have only been two seasons released so far.

However, fans have likely come to expect that A Man on the Inside would be an end-of-the-year treat released in November each year. Now that we finally have news about the third season's production schedule, it's becoming clear that a release before the end of 2026 isn't in the cards. For the first time in the series run, we're going to have a much longer wait than usual for new episodes.

A Man on the Inside season 3 won't premiere until 2027

As reported by What's on Netflix, A Man on the Inside season 3 won't even begin filming until fall 2026, which is when the season would normally be gearing up for release. Currently, the cast and crew are expected to start production in late September and wrap up filming in early November. There's no conceivable way that the season would manage to premiere this year.

Being so, A Man on the Inside season 3 will arrive on Netflix sometime in 2027, though the streaming service has not yet revealed exactly when that will be (which make a ton of sense since cameras haven't even started rolling). We will have to remain patient until Netflix announces filming has begun and we get a better sense for when the episodes could land on our watch lists.

The reasons for the third season's delay could be due to the show's late renewal from Netflix or other behind-the-scenes reasons. But creator Michael Schur has been working on his new Peacock comedy series Dig, which stars Amy Poehler and Hugh Laurie. The series was in production from January to May 2026 and makes its premiere on the NBC streamer on Nov. 23.

When season 3 could drop on Netflix

Right now, with the little information we have about the third season's filming dates, we can make an educated guess on a possible release timeframe. Considering A Man on the Inside has been capped at eight episodes per season, that reduces the amount of time for filming and in post-production. The turnaround will be much quicker than other Netflix shows, but there's still a wait to be had.

A year-long wait from the time production begins or ends isn't expected in the case of A Man on the Inside season 3. Hopefully, Netflix will prep the comedy for its return by mid-2027. A release in the early parts of the new year, perhaps even in the springtime, is too soon, which is why we're leaning closer toward summer 2027. Fingers crossed, the series returns sooner rather than later.

As of this writing in August 2026, Netflix hasn't shared casting or plot details about A Man on the Inside season 3. Because each season focuses on a new case, the show welcomes new cast members, but we haven't met any for season 3. Danson will remain in the lead with Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, and Stephanie Beatriz also certain to reprise their roles.
