My Life with the Walter Boys is a new Netflix show to check out in the month of December. It’s based on Ali Novak’s popular Wattpad novel of the same name and follows a young teen girl who after suffering a tragic loss, is forced to move across the country to live with her late mother’s best friend and her family.

15-year-old Jackie Howard was living a privileged life in Manhattan, New York, with her dad and fashion designer mom before her world came crashing down. On an important night for her, she finds out that her mom, dad, and older sister were involved in an accident that took their lives. Now, she has to be uprooted from her life in New York to move to rural Colorado to live with her new guardian and her mother’s best friend, Katherine Walter, her husband, and their 10 kids.

Although still struggling with her family’s death, Jackie continues to put all her focus on her academic studies while in Colorado. Her goal is to get into her dream college, Princeton, and she’s determined to make it happen. But she soon finds her focus tested when she catches the interest of two of the Walter boys.

What is My Life With the Walter Boys rated?

My Life With the Walter Boys is rated TV-14, meaning it may not be suitable for ages under 14. According to Netflix, a show that has a TV-14 age rating is recommended for teens. And given that this show has been billed as a teen series, this age rating seems appropriate.

In fact, one of the main actors of the series, Noah LaLonde, even considers it a “family show.” I would agree. There isn’t any explicit sexual activity or intense violence and intense sexual references. It’s definitely a show that I believe the entire family can sit down and watch. Even series showrunner Melanie Halsall says that the teen series is aimed at a “broader demographic.”

Halsall spoke with the Calgary Herald and said this about the show’s intended audience base.

"“What I always wanted to write was a show that a 15-year-old girl could watch and she could sit and watch it with her 45-year-old dad and neither of them would want to turn it off because they are embarrassed by anything. So it’s a very positive story. It’s treated with a lot of lightness and it’s all about hope and family and that sort of thing.”"

It was given a TV-14 age rating for strong language and substances. However, there’s barely any profanity and use of substances. If I recall correctly, a character uses the B-word in one scene and another character smokes weed in another scene. There are also scenes showing underage drinking. There’s some partial nudity when it comes to a teen boy being shirtless. Additionally, you can expect to see characters kissing and making out, but nothing too serious.

Although we believe My Life With the Walter Boys is a show that can be watched by the whole family, parents are still strongly cautioned. But overall, it’s up to you to make an informed decision about what is appropriate for you and your family.
