If you’re ready for some action, humor, and romance on Netflix, look no further than the new series Obliterated from the team behind Cobra Kai. But if you’re expecting something heartfelt and earnest, the action-comedy feels more like a raunchy R-rated movie.
In the series, Shelley Hennig and Nick Zano lead the cast as Ava Winters and Chad “Mac” McKnight. While Ava leads the elite team to prevent the terrorist attack in Las Vegas, she butts heads with Chad, who’s also a leader in his own right.
But do they ever act on the tension between them? Also, what happened to Ava’s fiancé who’s mentioned early on in the season? Here’s everything you need to know about whether Ava and Chad get together and the truth about Ava’s romantic past.
WARNING: Spoilers ahead from the first season of Obliterated.
Ava’s fiancé was killed on an MI6 mission
After the team presumes their mission successful in the first episode of the season, Ava has a flashback to her relationship, but it’s not a memory that fills her with joy but rather grief. Later on in the season, Director Langdon comments that it was “too soon” for Ava to go back to work and lead this team. Chad overhears the conversation and asks what “too soon” means.”
Ava reveals that prior to the mission, she was engaged. He fiancé was MI6 and during a mission, he was captured and killed. Thinking it would help her move on from his death, she jumped back into work, which she now second guesses as the wrong decision after their attempts to track down Koslov and the bomb goes all kinds of sideways. Chad reassures her that she never wavered in her leadership and didn’t let them down.
Do Ava and Chad end up together?
The enemies to lovers trope prevails in Obliterated as Ava and Chad begin the series as two team leaders frequently locking horns. They can’t stand each other on some level, but on another level, there’s something intriguing that pulls them toward each other. When they celebrate their assumed win in episode 1, they give in to the attraction and sleep together (kind of). They attempt to have sex again in a later episode, under the watchful eye of a camel, though they’re interrupted again.
For much of the season, it’s business as usual, but when the team falls apart and separates, Ava and Chad have a huge fight. They say things to each other that hit below the belt. Once the team comes back together, she and Chad apologize to each other and Ava opens up about her late fiancé. In that moment, they see each other as people, not just teammates. It’s clear that there’s something between them.
In the season finale, when Ava and Chad are tracking Lana/Anastasia and find themselves in the elevator shaft, they appear to have become an official item. Chad kisses her before they take on Lana’s henchmen, and he ends up sacrificing himself in order for Ava to complete to mission. He’s presumed dead and Ava feels that grief but pushes on.
Thankfully, Chad doesn’t die from the fall in the elevator shaft, and Ava and Chad do end up together. After stopping the bomb and saving Las Vegas from the attack, the team celebrates again — this time having actually earned it. Ava and Chad leave the party at the club early and go back to the hotel room, where they finally consummate their relationship in the shower.
