Sick of Black Friday? Here’s what to watch on Netflix instead this weekend
By Mads Lennon
Now that Thanksgiving is over, many Americans are gearing up to shop til they drop on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but if you’re not a fan of dealing with the crowds or don’t have the cash to spare, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy your weekend. Netflix subscribers have several options to keep them entertained over the next few days, including the first five episodes of the Squid Game-inspired reality show Squid Game: The Challenge and a compelling new Scandinavian drama.
I’ll admit there aren’t tons of options being added this weekend, likely due to the holiday, but we’re still breaking down the Netflix additions that are likely to become popular in coming weeks. Beyond that, here are some of the movies and shows currently in Netflix’s Top 10 that we recommend checking out if you haven’t yet:
- The Crown season 6 part 1
- Best. Christmas. Ever!
- Scott Pilgrim Takes Off
- The Killer
- Escaping Twin Flames
- Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Squid Game: The Challenge
Despite its existence seemingly contradicting the entire meaning of the actual show, Squid Game: The Challenge is just as addicting as its parent series. That said the show often feels rather bleak and dystopian as we watch the contestants get pushed to the brink all in competition for a massive multi-million dollar prize.
Fans of Squid Game will recognize many of the games and challenges played in the reality series as the production did an incredible job of creating exact set replicas, but there are some new additions, too, to keep things fresh and exciting. The first five episodes of the show dropped on Nov. 22 and the new series is sure to become another hit for Netflix. New episodes air weekly through Dec. 6.
A Nearly Normal Family
If you’re like me, and you can’t get enough of Netflix’s dark dramas, then consider adding A Nearly Normal Family to your watchlist this weekend. At just six episodes, this Swedish series is a relatively short binge. An understated character-driven drama, A Nearly Normal Family follows the Sandells, including husband and wife Adam and Ulrika and their teenage daughter Stella.
At just 15, Stella is assaulted while away at camp and her parents opt not to report it because they don’t think she’ll be believed. This decision forever changes Stella’s life and deeply impacts her moving forward. Four years after the assault, Stella begins seeing an older man and then gets arrested for his murder. Her parents become determined to clear her name, no matter what. Based on the book of the same name by M. T. Edvardsson.
Leo
I haven’t had the chance to watch Leo myself yet, but if you’re looking for something lighthearted and family-friendly to watch this weekend then you can’t go wrong with Adam Sandler‘s latest musical comedy. Sander voices an old lizard and class pet who discovers he only has one year remaining.
Hoping to escape his captivity, Leo soon realizes he’d be better off helping the students escape from their mean teacher. Several of Sandler’s family members, including his daughters and You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah stars Sunny and Sadie Sandler. Cecily Strong, Bill Burr, and Jason Alexander also star.
