Why Stranger Things won’t be back in 2024

In May 2022, the blockbuster-sized fourth season of Stranger Things premiered on Netflix after almost three years of waiting and delivered one of the highest-performing and most beloved seasons of the show yet, introducing fan-favorite characters like Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) and Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).

Unfortunately, fans are currently in the midst of another between-season hiatus and odds are, this wait will be as long as the previous one, maybe even longer. In February 2022, Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer announced that the forthcoming fifth season of Stranger Things would also be the last.

At the time, fans were hopeful that the next season would come by 2024. Stranger Things has always had a longer wait time between seasons because of its significant VFX and sets. As the show has grown, so has its budget and length, leading to the production and filming shoot taking much longer. Season 4 was the biggest season yet, with almost every episode running over an hour and the finale running about 2 1/2 hours, which is practically unheard of for a television episode.

Well, maybe the show could have still released in 2024, but the WGA and SAG strikes dashed those hopes pretty quickly. Lasting the majority of 2023, there has been a massive work stoppage in Hollywood and just about every show or film has been impacted.

Stranger Things season 5 is expected in 2025

The truth is, we still don’t really know when Stranger Things season 5 is going to come, but everyone is hoping for a 2025 release date at the latest. Filming is reportedly set to begin on the last season very soon, which is a good sign, although it will probably take about a year for it to be completed, putting completion in the second half of 2025.

After that, post-production will begin, which could take an additional six months or so. It seems like the summer of 2025 would be a good predictor, especially since most seaosns of the show have aired in the summer, so it feels right that the final season would, too. Stranger Things: The First Shadow will run through 2024

Even though we won’t be getting new episodes of Stranger Things in 2024, the good news is that the Stranger Things stage play The First Shadow is running in the West End in London now until August 25, 2024 at the Phoenix Theater on Charing Cross Road.

While not everyone can get to London to see the show, there is already information floating around online about the plot details and it has been confirmed that the play will provide hints as to what is going to happen in the upcoming fifth and final season. Learn more about the play right here.
