When Stranger Things season 4 was released on Netflix back in 2022, everyone was excited to finally see Mike, Eleven, and the rest of the Stranger Things gang back on their screens. But there were also some new characters introduced in the fourth installment, and one character in particular stole the hearts of many. We’re talking about Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn). Rest in peace to one of the best characters in the sci-fi series.

Eddie Munson was introduced in the first episode of Stranger Things season 4 and appeared in every episode except the fourth episode. He was a student at Hawkins High School and was the leader of the Hellfire Club, a student organization where its members would play Dungeons & Dragons.

Considered an outsider, Eddie didn’t mind not fitting in. In fact, he made it his purpose as the leader of the Hellfire Club to reach out to other outsiders like him. His objection to conforming didn’t sit well with the popular kids at Hawkins High, leading to constant altercations. But Eddie didn’t let anybody get him down. He even became friends with Dustin, Lucas, and Mike.

Overall, Eddie was a good guy and he did not deserve to suffer such a tragic death. But how did he die, and in what episode? Find out right below.

Eddie meets his tragic demise in episode 9 of the fourth season, which is the season finale. Stranger Things season 4 episode 9 is titled “Chapter Nine: The Piggyback.” His death happens closer to the end of the episode.

How does Eddie die in Stranger Things season 4?

Basically, Eddie sacrifices himself to help the rest of the Stranger Things gang defeat Vecna. While Nancy, Steve, and Robin storm the Creel House in the Upside Down in an attempt to kill Vecna, Eddie and Dustin team up to lure Vecna’s demobats away from the house.

Eddie gets on top of his trailer in the Upside Down and strums along on his guitar some heavy metal to get the attention of the bats and lure them away from the Creel House. Although this plan ends up working, there are just too many bats for Eddie and Dustin to handle, so they take refuge inside the trailer. But the bats make their way inside the trailer, so Eddie and Dustin try to make a run for it by going back to the real world. While Dustin makes it back to the real world, Eddie decides to stay in the Upside Down to help Steve, Nancy, Robin, and everyone else.

While Dustin yells for Eddie to come back to the real world, Eddie ignores his pleas, gets on his bike, and rides away from the trailer to lure the bats away. His goal is to buy Steve, Nancy, and Robin more time. But sadly, the bats overpower him and ultimately kill him. Dustin manages to make his way back to the Upside Down and be there for Eddie as he takes his last breath, but it’s a heartbreaking scene to watch.
