One of the most highly anticipated Netflix anime releases of 2023 is now out. You had to know that we’re talking about Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. People everywhere can now stream the new animated series, but that doesn’t mean it’s a show targeted at audiences of all ages. Below, we shared the age rating and parents guide so that you’ll know whether it’s okay for kids to watch.

Based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s hit series of graphic novels of the same name, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off follows 23-year-old bass player of Sex Bob-Omb, Scott Pilgrim, as he meets and falls in love with his dream girl, Ramona Flowers. But things become complicated when he finds himself having to fight all seven of her evil exes.

O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski worked together to bring this anime adaptation to Netflix with the complete main cast from the 2010 film adaptation, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, coming back to voice their respective roles. Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Satya Bhabha, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Alison Pill, and Aubrey Plaza are just some of the actors voicing characters in the series.

What is Scott Pilgrim Takes Off rated?

I’ll start off by saying that Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is not a show meant for younger kids to be watching. It’s rated TV-MA, which means it’s meant to be watched by mature, adult audiences only. In fact, Netflix has even billed it as an adult animated series.

It was given a TV-MA age rating for strong language and smoking, but there is also more content shown in the series that many parents would deem inappropriate for a younger audience to be watching.

Here’s a list of some scenes from the anime series that could be considered unsuitable for younger kids:

  • A woman and man are shown half-naked.
  • A woman and man are shown making out.
  • A man is shown briefly on fire.
  • There’s some blood and a lot of cartoon violence.

However, there is no nudity or explicit sexual content, and the swearing is mostly bleeped out. An audience that is 17 years old and older should be fine watching this show. We just wouldn’t recommend letting anybody younger than 17 years old watch it.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is streaming now only on Netflix.
