There’s a new animated series to check out on Netflix called Unicorn Academy, and it’s one of the top shows on the streamer at the moment. While some animated shows on Netflix are kid-friendly, others are not. That’s why we wanted to help you out by sharing the parents guide and age rating for Unicorn Academy below.

Based on Julie Sykes’ popular book series of the same name, Unicorn Academy is part of a deal between Spin Master Entertainment and Netflix. Spin Master is the same studio behind successful kids’ media franchises Paw Patrol and Bakugan. On Nov. 2, a 72-minute movie premiere dropped on Netflix, along with the first eight episodes, making up the show’s first season.

When a young teen named Sophia finds out she’s accepted into a prestigious academy, she has no idea that the academy is actually a magical unicorn academy located on Unicorn Island. Upon arrival, she quickly realizes that she has a lot to learn about the fantastical creatures roaming the land. She, along with other selected teens, soon discovers their destinies as unicorn riders and must band together to protect their island and its magic from a dark force.

What is Unicorn Academy rated on Netflix?

Remember how I said that some animation on Netflix isn’t okay for kids? Well, Unicorn Academy is. In fact, it’s billed as a kid-animated series. It’s been given a TV-Y7 age rating, meaning it’s appropriate for ages 7 and up.

There is fantasy, violence, and fear. While this might not be suitable for a younger audience below the age of 7, it should be fine for older kids. Since it is a kid’s show, you don’t have to worry about anything inappropriate like sexual content, profanity, or consumption of alcohol. There isn’t any blood either.

The only thing in the series that some parents might not want their kids watching is the magic aspect. The show centers around magic. While the Unicorn Academy students use unicorn magic, the antagonist uses grim magic. But overall, everything in the series is geared toward kids.

Here’s what Spin Master’s president of entertainment Jen Dodge told The Hollywood Reporter about the show’s age rating:

"“It is specifically geared six to nine. But what we know from our research and what we attempted and set out to do when we were creating this was keep it wholesome storytelling still of these kids who do want to do well, want to fight on the side of good, so the only time that they kind of step outside of the rules is really in service to fighting evil. So it can be watched by a younger audience, and the fun, sparkles and beautiful unicorns and the fun comedy — all of that is, as young as four we’ve seen in research enjoys it and watches it.And then because there is a deeper mythology that we’ve built around the series that really pulls up to that older demographic. So that sweet spot was six to nine, but appealing as young as four and going up a little to tween. At this moment in time, co-viewing is also everything, and we wanted to create something that parents and families could enjoy together, so we hope and feel it’s broad that way.”"
