October 2023 has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop watching all the spooky, creepy, and sometimes disturbing titles available on Netflix. If you like your horror as a comedy, psychological, or chilling thriller, the streamer has something for you.

Netflix has done a fine job creating original horror content. Titles like Gerald’s Game, Bird Box, and the Fear Street Trilogy have all been top movies. Be sure to check out His House and Creep 2, as both movies have a 100% rank on Rotten Tomatoes.

Whatever your favorite horror genre is, Netflix will have something to please.

Scary Netflix shows and movies this week

Get Out

You can never go wrong with a movie directed by Jordan Peele. He has a knack for creating horror in real settings, which is terrifying because the viewer believes it could happen to them. In the movie Get Out, a young black man discovers shocking truths about his white girlfriend’s family that put his life in danger. A combination of horror and comedy, this movie addresses racism, pays homage to other great horror films, and throws in some great comedy.

Other horror titles on Netflix from Peele: Ma and Us.

The Pope’s Exorcist

Based on Father Gabriele Amorth’s books An Exorcist Tells His Story (1990) and An Exorcist: More Stories (1992), The Pope’s Exorcist stars Russell Crowe as Amorth in this supernatural horror.  The story tells of Amorth, chief exorcist of the Vatican who performed over 100,000 exorcisms during his life. The movie shows battles against Satan and demons who possess the innocent. While the film received mixed reviews from critics, most viewers have enjoyed Crowe’s performance in an intelligent take on exorcism.

Midnight Mass

Another great name in horror, Mike Flanagan, created and directed the Netflix original supernatural horror series Midnight Mass. Of Flanagan’s Netflix series, Midnight Mass is the best, which showcases Flanagan’s storytelling abilities as it was a story he created, where others have used some source material. Set on Crockett Island, a deeply religious community, a prodigal son returns home to find supernatural events have begun to happen when a new priest joins the church.

Other great Flanagan titles on Netflix The Haunting of Hill House, Before I Wake, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Gerald’s Game, The Midnight Club, and The Fall of the House of Usher.

The Babysitter

The teen black comedy horror The Babysitter is a hilarious yet gruesome tale of a young boy who discovers his babysitter, Bee, is a member of a satanic cult. When she discovers he saw more than he should, Bee and her group try to kill him. The blood and gore are balanced with an unexpected wholesomeness. If you enjoy slasher-esque films with a lot of blood and some hilarious humor mixed in, don’t miss it. You can also watch the sequel, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, on Netflix.

Jaws

Next, we are going old school with the 1975 Steven Spielberg film that made a generation fear the ocean, Jaws. Based on the same-titled book by Peter Benchley, Jaws tells about a New England vacation spot, Amity Island, which has been terrorized by a shark who begins attacking people at the beach. The newly appointed police chief joins a marine biologist and a professional shark hunter to hunt down the man-eating great white shark. Upon its release, Jaws was given positive reviews and since is known as one of the best movies of all time.
