Midnight Mass is a thought-provoking examination of faith and religion with a backdrop consisting of a small, isolated island town where everyone knows everyone’s history. Or, at least, they like to think they do.

In seven episodes, viewers are taken through a story that peels back the covers on each of the characters’ lives as both the truth of them and the lies they tell themselves and others are revealed.

At the heart of the story is a horror visited upon them not only by a ravenous creature that roams their village but their reactions to the supposed miracles being worked by their new priest.

Bible verses, prejudice, assumptions, and grace are used with powerful effect throughout this Netflix original series until it comes to a conclusion that sounds the death knell on Crockett Island. While we won’t spoil for whom the bell tomes, we will say that the road to getting to the finale is full of twists, turns, and revelations.

There is a lot happening in Midnight Mass once the show truly gets its legs under it. From betrayals to forgiveness to secrets shared, it’s a series that takes its time with the narrative and ends with clarity. All in all, it’s a complete story regardless of the last few minutes in its runtime.

Here’s why fans of Midnight Mass shouldn’t be expecting a sequel.

Why Midnight Mass season 2 isn’t happening

Spoilers for Midnight Mass

First and foremost, Midnight Mass is billed as a limited series. It is meant to be a contained story and wrapped up within its sole season which is exactly what the series does in its seven episode run.

Though the ending does leave room for a possible sequel, there’s not much to mine as the plot on Crockett Island is concluded unequivocally.

There is a question of whether or not the creature succumbed to its fate but that answer isn’t likely to lead to another season for this show. The creature was, after all, the catalyst for the events that unfold in Midnight Mass, not the main character.

The series also isn’t the beginning of another Flanagan horror anthology, so we’re not likely to see more shows sent in this universe. For more news and coverage on chilling and thrilling shows and movies on Netflix, stay tuned to Netflix Life.
