If you can even believe it, we’re so close to the end of 2023. The year truly flew by, but when it comes to Netflix, there were so many new hit shows and movies that left their mark. Luckily, the streaming service will end the year with a bang with its December 2023 new releases.

The last month of 2023 brings the final episodes of The Crown season 6, which will also end the Emmy-winning, fan-favorite series. On top of The Crown, the exciting Korean horror series Sweet Home returns for season 2, and the animated limited series Carol & The End of the World arrives.

Beyond the incredibly binge-worthy shows coming in December, our movie watch lists will be especially spoiled with the Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore film May December, Julia Roberts’ psychological thriller Leave the World Behind, and Zack Snyder’s first part of Rebel Moon.

Sweet Home season 2

Release Date: Dec. 1

In December 2020, the first season of the Korean apocalyptic horror series Sweet Home premiered, and three years later, the show finally returns for its highly anticipated second season. Sweet Home centers on residents of an apartment building who are threatened by monsters, and in season 2, it looks like the survivors will continue to fight new threats. Don’t miss the electric new season when it makes its premiere at the top of December.

Carol & The End of the World

Release Date: Dec. 6

If you love adult animated shows and limited series, then you will love Netflix’s animated offering Carol & The End of the World, which premieres on Dec. 6. The 10-episode series comes from Dan Guterman, a writer on Community and Rick and Morty, and features Euphoria star Martha Kelly as the titular character. As Earth nears extinction and everyone scrambles to make the most of their time, the generally awkward Carol avoids the self-indulgence.

The Crown season 6 part 2

Release Date: Dec. 16

The second part of The Crown season 6 follows the first part’s premiere on Nov. 16. For the first time, a season of the series was split into two parts. The first part consists of four episodes, while the second part wraps up the season and series with the last six episodes. Picking up where part 1 left off, you don’t want to miss a second of the gripping final season when the series finale lands on Netflix on Dec. 16.

May December

Release Date: Dec. 1

Academy Award winners Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore team up for the black dramedy Netflix movie May December, which earned critical praise upon its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Riverdale star Charles Melton also stars in the film about a married couple with a large age gap experiencing renewed pressure from an actress 20 years after their relationship hit the tabloids. It’s already getting Oscar buzz, so don’t miss May December on Dec. 1.

Leave the World Behind

Release Date: Dec. 8

Another Academy Award winner comes to Netflix in December, as Julia Roberts leads the cast of the psychological thriller Leave the World Behind. Joining Roberts in the highly anticipated film from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail are Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Myha’la, and Kevin Bacon. Doesn’t the cast and director sell the movie itself? Check out what’s sure to be one of the year’s best movies when it arrives on Netflix on Dec. 8.

Maestro

Release Date: Dec. 20

Ready for more Oscar-caliber actors? Bradley Cooper’s latest directorial effort, the Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro, stars himself, Carey Mulligan, Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke, Sarah Silverman, Michael Urie, and more familiar faces. Cooper and Mulligan will again be aiming for award nominations with their performances, and we can begin streaming the movie just ahead of the Christmas holiday when it arrives on Netflix on Dec. 20.

Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire

Release Date: Dec. 22

If you’re in the mood for one last epic movie before 2023 ends, your watch list needs to include the first part of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon. I mean, Dune: Part Two isn’t coming out until next year, so there’s definitely room for a fantasy movie. The first part, titled A Child of Fire, releases on Dec. 22, and the second part, titled The Scargiver, releases on April 19, 2024. It’s an exciting movie that could pawn a possible franchise for Netflix, so don’t miss out on the movie this holiday season.
