If you have had the fortune of streaming Tom Holland’s Uncharted on Netflix, then you probably were blown away by the amazing story of Nathan “Nate” Drake. But if you haven’t, here’s a quick rundown on what the exciting adventure movie is about (via Sony Pictures):
"Street-smart Nathan Drake is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan and lost 500 years ago by the House of Moncada. What starts as a heist job for the duo becomes a globe-trotting, white-knuckle race to reach the prize before the ruthless Santiago Moncada, who believes he and his family are the rightful heirs. If Nate and Sully can decipher the clues and solve one of the world’s oldest mysteries, they stand to find $5 billion in treasure and perhaps even Nate’s long-lost brother…but only if they can learn to work together."
With a synopsis like this, it’s not a shock that the story captivated many. What is a shock is the fact that fans haven’t got word on a sequel despite the film’s popularity. What’s the hold-up? Here’s what we know so far.
The latest updates on the potential Uncharted 2
As of October 2023, no news confirms that an Uncharted sequel is on the way. However, being that the game has multiple story arcs as well as a few spinoffs, it wouldn’t surprise us if Sony Pictures does decide to greenlight a second installment.
Additionally, having in mind that the 2022 film left on a somewhat cliffhanger — Nate’s brother, Sam, being shown at the end of the movie imprisoned but otherwise alive and well — there’s a pretty good possibility that there is still more of Nate’s story in store for audiences.
Upon the film’s release in February 2022 and its success at the box office, bringing in $106.4 million globally during its opening weekend, Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tom Rothman referred to Uncharted as “a new hit movie franchise.” While we’re still hopeful for a sequel in the future, one has not been officially announced yet.
In August 2023, producer Charles Roven spoke to The Hollywood Reporter amid the box office success of Oppenheimer, and the outlet asked him about the potential of a sequel to the video game film. His response seemed incredibly optimistic about the likelihood of another film being made in a potential franchise.
When asked if there’s “desire to continue Uncharted” following its box office returns, Roven responded, “Oh yeah!” Read the full quote below:
"“We had a really good time with that movie. The fans really liked the movie, and people who didn’t know anything about the game really liked the movie. So we are definitely looking to make another one of those.”"
As previously mentioned, there’s surely more stories and adventures that could come about for a future sequel, and there’s definitely an audience that would and will watch. While it might not be a main priority at the moment, it appears the producer hasn’t forgotten and wants to make more. Fingers crossed positive developments arise on that front soon.
Should we receive a sequel, it’s fairly difficult to determine what exactly it will be about, especially since the film doesn’t follow the video game to a T. Nevertheless, we predict that it will be about how, against all odds, Nate and Sam reunite. Also, perhaps the sequel will touch on what Nate’s fellow adventurer, Sully, is up to now after he wasn’t able to secure all of the Magellan expedition treasure. (Maybe he’ll join Nate once more?)
Would Tom Holland return for a sequel?
If Uncharted’s not-yet-confirmed sequel does follow Nathan Drake’s life, Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s Tom Holland is someone we would expect to reprise his role. The actor has expressed his love for the video game franchise in the past, so it’s safe to say this film is a passion that he won’t turn his back on anytime soon.
“I just love this game. It’s so exciting,” Holland stated while playing Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End alongside YouTuber Jacksepticeye. “That’s what we wanted to try to create with the film — an experience similar to the games, but with a story point of view that we’ve never seen before.”
But it would be beside us to not mention that Holland plays a young Nate Drake whereas the character in the game is much older. Having said this, there’s a possibility that the sequel will follow Nate’s life as an older and wiser man, meaning a different actor could be cast rather than Holland. Anything’s possible.
While promoting his Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room, Holland admitted that the challenging and demanding role in the crime thriller inspired him to take a year off from acting. His break began after filming on The Crowded Room completed last year, meaning that by June 2023, Holland has already completed about eight months of his year off.
While we know that he will reprise his role as Peter Parker in a fourth Spider-Man movie at some point, it’s unclear what the talented his up next on his schedule. Right now, that doesn’t seem to include an Uncharted sequel, but we can stay hopeful that once his break comes to an official end, more projects starring him will be announced. Fingers crossed another turn as Nate Drake is in the cards!
Would Mark Walhberg return for a sequel?
In September 2023, Mark Wahlberg spoke with Cigar Aficionado about the current status of his career, and he admitted that he’s looking to slow down a bit when it comes to acting. “I don’t think that I’ll be acting that much longer at the pace I am now. That’s for sure,” Wahlberg said. While some have taken his comments to mean he’s teasing a potential retirement in acting, he might have simply been misconstrued.
Wahlberg appears to want to slow down his acting career, which has found him starring in multiple projects per year. In 2022, he headlined Uncharted, Father Stu, and Me Time. While he hasn’t released anything new in 2023, he has three projects in the works: Arthur the King, The Union, and The Family Plan. He’s producing all three projects on top of starring in them, and he’s also a father of four and a business owner.
Just because Wahlberg said he won’t be acting “that much longer at the pace now” doesn’t mean he wouldn’t return for a potential sequel to Uncharted. If he doesn’t return to co-lead with Tom Holland, he could have a reduced supporting role or a cameo appearance. Of course, it all depends on if a sequel actually comes to fruition.
Hopefully, we do get more news about Uncharted 2 soon. Until then, be sure to watch Tom Holland in all his epicness in Uncharted streaming right now on Netflix.
