Knights of the Zodiac is one of the top movies on Netflix at the moment. It was released on the streamer on Oct. 26, and most people have already watched it. Now, they’re wondering if there will be a second film. As always, we’ve got you covered and shared all that we know about a potential Knights of the Zodiac sequel below.

Knights of the Zodiac is a fantasy film helmed by Tomasz Bagiński. He directed the movie from a screenplay co-written by Josh Campbell, Matt Stuecken, and Kiel Murray. Like many other films, it’s based on other pieces of work. It’s based on the Japanese manga Saint Seiya by Masami Kurumada as well as the anime series of the same name.

It was released in U.S. theaters in May 2023, and now it’s finally made its way to Netflix. One Piece star Mackenyu stars in the leading role as Seiya the Pegasus Knight. Seiya is a street orphan fighting for money while searching for his abducted sister. During one of his fights, he discovers he has mystical powers and soon starts training to be the chosen guardian of a reincarnated goddess.

Joining Mackenyu in the cast are Famke Janssen, Madison Iseman, Diego Tinoco, Mark Dacascos, Nick Stahl, Sean Bean, and others.

What are the chances of there being a Knights of the Zodiac sequel?

Let’s first start with what the creative team has said about a sequel. Toei Animation’s international producer, Ikezawa Yoshi, spoke with Variety about plans to turn it into a movie franchise. He spoke about how there’s still so much more source material to cover from the manga and anime series that can be turned into “many films.” He tells Variety that he and the rest of the creative team are looking at six films to make.

Here’s what Ikezawa Yoshi said about Knights of the Zodiac being a film franchise:

"“The original manga runs to 28 volumes of comic books. The original anime series had 140 episodes, plus 30 or 40 sequels that belong to the original comic. So that’s nearly 200 episodes. You can make many films with that. And, after the success of Marvel, studios are looking for properties that can make sequels, like “Harry Potter” or “Hunger Games.” We are looking at six movies as a package.”"

So, it looks like the creative team is completely on board to make more movies. But we run into an issue when it comes to how the first movie performed. Unfortunately, the first film was a box-office bomb, only bringing in $7 million against a $60 million budget. This is really bad…

It also received mostly negative reviews from critics. The first movie’s performance and reception play a huge part in the possibility of there being a sequel. Since the movie didn’t fare well at the box office and the audience reception wasn’t that great, this lowers the chances greatly of there being a Knights of the Zodiac sequel.

As of Oct. 30, there still hasn’t been any confirmation that there will be a second film. But if we had to guess, we’d say that the fantasy film would not be returning with a sequel. Our opinion is based on the first movie’s performance. Who knows, maybe the studio will still decide to give it another go regardless of how the first movie did. But for now, we don’t see this happening.
