In case you hadn’t heard the wonderful news, Netflix officially renewed Sweet Magnolias for season 4! Obviously, the renewal calls for a mandatory margarita night with your best friends, featuring a season 3 rewatch over chips and salsa and honest conversation.

Since the release of season 3 back in July 2023, fans have been anxiously awaiting news on the hit romantic drama’s fate. Considering season 3 didn’t really end on a major cliffhanger, fear about a possible cancellation surely crept in, but the third season performed far too well for Netflix to pack up and move away from Serenity.

In spite of the dual Hollywood labor strikes preventing the writers and cast to speak about the new season this summer and the months following, the show still managed to hit the top 10 in over 60 countries for a whopping 10 weeks. The romantic drama, which is based on the books by Sherryl Woods, can stand on its own, and it’s sticking around.

Sweet Magnolias season 4 begins writing process

Now that the writers’ strike has ended and season 4 has finally been confirmed, showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson took to Instagram to give fans of the series the exciting update they have been waiting for since the end of summer. The writing process has officially begun on season 4!

On Monday, Oct. 23, Anderson posted a photo on Instagram of an online call between the group of writers getting to work on season 4’s stories. The group of eight writers includes Bianca Sams, Alex Rubin, Barret Helms, Kale Futterman, Anthony Epling, Sara Jumel, and Sean Benum.

Anderson wrote in the caption:

"“Now that the news is out, I thought you might enjoy meeting the brilliant people who are working with me to craft Season 4 of SWEET MAGNOLIAS. […] You’re going to love what they’re creating!!!”"

Although the SAG-AFTRA strike remains in effect at the time of Anderson’s writers room announcement, series stars JoAnna Garcia Swisher and Jamie Lynn Spears showed support for their boss and team of writers by liking the post. Take a look at the photo of the writers and Anderson’s thrilling words in the post below!

As fans will remember, and as previously mentioned above, the third season ended without a major cliffhanger for the three central Magnolias. The season finale brought the town together for Dana Sue and Ronnie’s vow renewal celebration and left Maddie and Helen’s stories at satisfying place. Still, there’s plenty for season 4 to cover, especially since the fact that Bill is the biological father of Isaac hasn’t been revealed to Noreen or his children with Maddie.

Clearly, there’s a lot still to look forward to with season 4, and the season should be released sometime in 2024. The writers room beginning the writing process shows a great sign of movement on season 4, though the actors’ strike needs to reach a resolution before cameras can start rolling. Stay tuned for more exciting updates about the series!
